Dear friends,

International Conference "The Public Eye on Davos" in New York
From January 31 February 3 2002 at the United Nations Church Center (UN Plaza)

Parallel to the World Economic Forum annual meeting, "The Public Eye on DavosÒ was organizing for the third time an independent international conference with representatives from Southern and Northern countries in Davos, when the WEF shifted site to New York. Having already organized various panels, the core group of "The Public Eye on Davos" decided to transfer their conference to New York too.

The thematic focus is on the negative impacts of a one-sided economic globalization, and alternatives to the neoliberal model that are oriented around a socially just and environmentally sustainable development. The program* is divided into thematic blocks. Each block contains a short presentation followed by a moderated panel discussion in which the audience can participate.

1. BACKGROUND ON THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM (WEF)

What is the WEF?

Every year, 1,000 top business leaders, come together to shape the global
agenda, while political elites and media luminaries gaze on admiringly. The
World Economic Forum (WEF) will hold its annual meeting at the Waldorf
Astoria Hotel in New York City from January 31st to February 4th 2002. By
its own description, the WEF is a special club of elite business leaders,
whose annual meeting is the world's global business summit.

What is the WEF's agenda?

At the New York WEF summit, the world's richest CEOs will collaborate with
the world's most powerful politicians to set the global economic agenda.
Meanwhile, in the halls of Congress, the world's most powerful politicians
are collaborating with the world's richest CEOs to expand the "war on

Trans Gas Energy is planning to build one of the largest power plants in New York City on the Williamsburgh, Brooklyn waterfront at North 12th St. This plant would spew hundreds of tons of sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, formaldehyde and other toxic pollutants into the air each year.

There are already 5 existing or permitted power plants along a 1 1/2 mile
stretch of the North Brooklyn waterfront, and 97 facilities with air pollution permits within one mile of the TGE power plant site, contributing thousands of tons of toxic emissions into the air each year.

LiveWork Coalition Members and Friends,

Please be reminded that we will be having a very
important event this Sunday, December 16th,
4:30PM-5:30PM, to commemorate the D.U.M.B.O. evictions
of December 2000. This will be a Candlelight Rally at
the site of the evictions, 247 Water St.

The press and our legislative representatives will be
there, including Joe Lentol, Richard Gottfried and
others. A large turn-out will send a strong message to
the press and the legislators.

We need everyone to donate an hour of their time this
Sunday to stand with us in support of A5580, The Next
Generation Loft Law.
