Louis Lingg writes "On August 19 the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development transferred ownership of eleven of the twelve remaining squatted buildings on New York's Lower East Side to the Urban Homestead Assistance Board (UHAB), a nonprofit housing development agency. UHAB, in turn, will provide assistance in expeditiously completing renovation of the buildings, and will then turn the properties over to the tenants. The buildings will become low-income limited-equity tenant-owned and managed buildings.

Negotiations for this 'deal' began in 1999 when the Giuliani administration was still in office, but were delayed by the events of September 11. By early August 2002 the New York City Council, the Borough President and Mayor Bloomberg had all approved the 'deal.'

Urban affairs journal City Limits has posted Squatters Rites, an article examining how an almost two-decades long stand-off was finally resolved. The New York Times is also covering the story."

McDonald's Workers Resistance writes "OCTOBER 16TH 2002...
"Slaves who are ready to put up with anything are
spared nothing by the tyrants" - Georges Darien

On October 16th 1918, the people of Hungary began to
establish councils in their workplaces and
communities. They seized land from wealthy
landowners, occupied factories and freed prisoners.
Within a month Budapest was run by ordinary people for
the benefit of the many. Like too many courageous
struggles for freedom, the Hungarian councils republic
was eventually repressed and destroyed, only the
vision lingers on...

On October 16th 2002, a small proportion of the 1.5
million people employed by McDonalds around the world
will take our first tentative steps towards a better
world. This is an attempt to explain what's going to
happen, where this day of action came from, why it's
taking place and what we hope to achieve.

Protests in Szczecin Shipyards and the Workers' Situation in Poland

Zaczek

Over the last few years the situation of Polish workers has gotten much
worse due to economic recession. As a result, wages have been cut and
workers are forced to work in worse and worse conditions. Workers are being
blackmailed; either they agree with the conditions dictated by the bosses or
they lose their jobs. Employers most often explain themselves by saying
that they have to adapt to free market conditions and so effiency, which
already is rather high, has to be increased. They'll also tell you that
there are many people ready to take your job.

KRRS Activists Destroy Bt Cotton in Davanagere

DH News Service, Davanegere, August 6, 2002

Activists of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) destroyed Bt cotton
cultivated in an area of two acres at Rudranakatte near here on Sunday.

report at http://krrsquitmonsantoaction.8m.net/

photos at http://krrsquitmonsantoaction.8m.net/photo.html

The activists led by KRRS President Prof M D Nanjundaswamy convinced the
farmers before destroying the crops. Security was tightened in the village
to prevent any untoward incident. However, the police could not take any
steps against the activists as they destroyed the crops after convincing
the farmers.

Mallappa and Hanumanthappa, two farmers of the village had cultivated Bt
cotton. The KRRS activists told them that the crop would have to be
destroyed since it affected the environment.

KRRS office-bearers Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, K T Gangadhar, Honnur
Muniyappa, H Manjunath, M Channabasappa and hundreds of activists
participated in the operation.

Earlier, addressing the villagers, Prof Nanjudaswamy alleged that the crop,
though disease-resistant, would destroy farmer-friendly insects and affect
the environment.

He charged that the foreign companies were engaged in destroying the
agriculture here.

[In a previous post http://www.ainfos.ca/02/jun/ainfos00392.html
we pointed to attacks of "Disobbedianti" on anarchists.

Without discriminating between various groups who were associated in
the past with the Ya-Basta, a post: http://www.ainfos.ca/02/jun/ainfos00391.html
included among the guilty the Wu-Ming.

That post was a response to an interview distributing in a-infos-ca list and
whose English translation that was sent to us by Robeto is below.

The author seems to not understand the reasoning of the Wu-Ming
people to hold this style of a common name for the people of
their collective (like the previous Lute Bliset shared name by hundreds
of people in that Project).

It seems the author was not aware of the fact that the Wu-Ming people
have not join the Disobbedianti. Following is the main content of the
communication with Roberto Bui of the Wu-Ming:]

Louis Lingg writes "The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has put on-line a website providing comprehensive and current information about the Moussaoui trial. Many documents are available as PDF files.

On August 5 Moussaoui filed a motion requesting access to discovery evidence and standby counsel work product through a website to be maintained by standby counsel. cryptome.org has posted Moussaoui's motion and the government's response.

From the Low Appennines of Bologna to Piazza Alimonda

"One says solid things when he tries not to say extraordinary ones"

Isidore Ducasse, Count of Lautreamont, *Poems*, 1870

In the Fall and Winter of 1944 the population of the Tuscan-Emilian Appennine suffered many Nazi-Fascist retaliations and massacres. The Front was on the so-called "Gothic Line", the mountains were the natural border between the territory occupied by the Third Reich and that liberated by the Allies. The Nazis were bewildered by the extension of Partisan guerrilla warfare and aware that they were losing the war, thus committed themselves to the wildest and fiercest repression. The most famous massacre was in Marzabotto in October.

SOCIAL STRUGGLES IN ITALY

Creating a new Left in Italy

by ANTONIO NEGRI*

Translated by Ed Emery

A year ago the big Genoa demonstrations against the G8 summit were a shock
awakening for Italy. A few months previously the Left had been swept from
power and Silvio Berlusconi seemed to think that his huge electoral
majority gave him carte blanche to do what he liked. Genoa upset his
plans. The anti-globalisation movement turned out in force and mobilised
large numbers of people. New forms of struggle are now beginning to
emerge, and a working class offensive on various fronts has shown no sign
of abating. Paradoxically, by bringing people out onto the streets the
victory of the Right has raised hopes for a possibility of re-founding the
Left and rebuilding the Republic.

Anonymous Comrade writes "salon.com is reporting that rats eager to snitch on their fellow citizens through the U.S. Government's Operation TIPS program are now being forwarded to Fox Broadcasting's 'America's Most Wanted' television program."
