A-Infos writes:

(Valencia, Spain, Oct. 25, 2000)—Approximately 2000 people assembled for an unpermitted evening march
to protest the arrest of four squatters on charges of "terrorist
association" and in solidarity with the occupied social center "MALAS
PULGAS", which is under threat of eviction. The march was led by the
families of the arrested. Busses had brought supporters from Madrid
and Barcelona.

Police presence was heavy. Identification was demanded of many
participants and there were two brief scuffles with one protestor
being injured. A benefit concert was held afterwards at the occupied
social center "La Palona"

Germany: Massive State Infiltration of Far-Right Party

By Marius Heuser

On October 8, a hearing took place before Germany's Supreme Court, the Bundesverfassungsgericht (BVG), to clarify whether to continue the government's proceedings to ban the right-wing extremist NPD (National Democratic Party of Germany). This legal action had ground to a halt following revelations that the German state had massively infiltrated the NPD.

Memo Reveals FBI National Security Wiretap Violations

epic.org

A recently released FBI memo provides the latest
evidence that the Bureau has frequently overstepped its
legal bounds when conducting intrusive national
security surveillance. The document, which was written
in April 2000 and originally classified as "secret,"
reveals that FBI agents illegally videotaped suspects,
intercepted e-mail without court permission, recorded
the wrong phone conversations, and conducted
"unauthorized searches." The incidents detailed in the
memo involved cases requiring warrants under the
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Ted Byfield writes concerning the recent US Supreme Court testimony:

The Eldred case is potentially very important, potentially a fiasco.
If it turns out to be the latter, hopefully it'll also be the end of
the popularity/dominance of reformists like Lessig and their affirmative critiques and market worship. On the other hand, if the former pans out — and
the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act gets shot down — things
may get pretty interesting. Not necessarily good, but interesting.

Here's the transcript of Lessig's argument before the court, about as
hot off the presses as it gets.

"After Sept. 11, CIA Becomes a Growing Force on Campus"

"Agency Finds It Needs Experts From Academia And Colleges Pressed for Cash Like the Revenue"

Wall Street Journal, Oct. 4, 2002

"But by and large, these CIA guys are people whose primary goal is to keep the rest of us safe." — Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Physics Prof. Ryne Raffaelle

"We may have to suspend some freedoms for a little while."
— RIT President Albert J. Simone

Henrietta, N.Y. -- John Phillips has some daunting assignments for seniors at the Rochester Institute of Technology. To graduate, some of them will tackle any of a half-dozen science projects he's dreamed up at RIT's request. For instance: how to identify a terrorist in disguise based on bone structure, and how to bend light rays to keep a spy in the shadows. "Make me invisible," the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Mr. Phillips exhorted researchers during an August visit to the 15,300-student university in this Rochester suburb. Mr. Phillips takes more than an academic interest in these questions. As chief scientist for the Central Intelligence Agency, he's looking for creative ways -- and minds -- to protect American operatives and track down enemies.

Harvard Role in Harken Called Deeper

Group Says Partnership Kept Bush Firm Afloat

By Michael Kranish, Boston Globe, October 9 2002

WASHINGTON — Harvard University's financial relationship with President
Bush's former oil company was deeper than previously understood, with the
university's management fund creating a separate ''off the books''
partnership with Harken Energy Corp. that helped keep afloat the financially
troubled company, according to a report to be released today.

HarvardWatch, a student-alumni group that monitors the school's investments,
plans to issue the report and say that it has analyzed documents showing
that the Harvard fund, an independent entity that manages the university's
endowment, formed a partnership in 1990 with Bush's oil firm called the
Harken Anadarko Partnership. The partnership effectively removed $20 million
of debt from Harken's books, relieving the Texas company's short-term
financial problems.

DaaaihLoong writes: "Update on Barrilee Bannister, #11309597, in Oregon's Coffee Creek Correctional Facility:

Although Norma Land, the Executive Assistant to the prison's superintendent, has insisted that Barrilee Bannister's change in job status (from full-time to part-time) has nothing to do with the fact that she reported a guard's sexual harassment, Bannister lost her job as visiting room orderly on 1 October.

When I spoke to Norma Land on 27 September, she at first said that one issue had nothing to do with the otehr. She then contradicted herself and said that she was not allowed to talk about cases which were under investigation. When I reminded her that I was calling about Bannister's job status and not the sexual harassment (which I had called about the week before), she became flustered and stated, "We're not talking about any of Ms. Bannister's issues right now."

I then asked if the change in job status was part of the investigation. She told me that she couldn't comment on that. She also would not say how long she thought the investigation would take.

Someone from Oregon also called. Norma Land asked her if Barrilee was asking people to call in and then proceeded to give her the same run-around.

On 27 September, Barrilee was confronted by Captain Bjerke that she was being overly dramatic and blowing things out of proportion. When Bannister asked for examples of such behavior, the captain didn't answer.

Please continue to call Superintendent Joan Palmateer's office at (503) 570-6412. Ask why Bannister's job was terminated despite the fact that she has been doing an excellent job and has been actively (and successfully) soliciting donations for the children's visiting room. She is also asking that callers ask Ms. Palmateer or her assistant Norma Land how many inmates have died in the six months that CCCF has been open (there have been quite a few)."
