Keeping Track of John Poindexter

By Paul Boutin, 02:00 AM Dec. 14, 2002 PT

The head of the US government's
Total Information Awareness
project, which aims to root
out potential terrorists by
aggregating credit-card,
travel, medical, school and
other records of everyone in
the United States, has
himself become a target of
personal data profiling.

Online pranksters, taking
their lead from a San
Francisco journalist, are
publishing John Poindexter's
home phone number, photos of
his house and other personal
information to protest the
TIA program.

The photos of John Poindexter's house are found here: cryptome.

FCC Agents Raid Berkeley Liberation Radio!

Protest Rally at the Oakland Federal Building

1301 Clay Street, on Wednesday, December 18 at noon!

On the morning of December 11, 2002, agents of the Federal Communications Commision confiscated the broadcast equipment of Berkeley Liberation Radio 104.1 FM. Using a little known legal tactic, the FCC acquired an arrest warrant for the transmitting devices. "This is a free speech issue and the FCC is trying to prevent us from exercising our First Amendment right," said Bryan Smith (BPM Smith), a Berkeley Liberation Radio DJ. "If more people ran radio stations without their endorsement then the FCC would lose power. That makes them attack us but the FCC cannot govern us and they cannot extort money from us by way of fines."

In a press release today, where they gloat at three prosecutions in course against children for warez activity brought to the attention of their 'European Internet Investigation Team', the Business Software Alliance also impart some real pearls of business ideology. And some cautionary words for parents:

Young people are often enthusiastic users, particularly of interactive services like email, chat and instant messaging. These are great tools that have been developed by the software industry so we do not want to limit children’s learning and enjoyment of the Internet. In short, the danger of ‘hanging-out’ in cyberspace is the same as loitering in the wrong part of town. Teenagers can just as easily fall in with the wrong crowd and unintentionally become involved in other serious crimes.

The software industry has been determined to refashion social norms around copyright for quite a while now, and they even managed to have it endorsed as State Doctrine (fear!) during the assembly of the National Information Infrastructure Report between 1993 and 1995. Somewhere out there exist hilarious websites dedicated to teaching children that sharing is wrong. Theft. Criminal.

(not) Marcos on `Anarchism`

First and foremost, it must be said that only small elements of the Frente Zapatista are willing to engage in a debate with insignificant elements along an ideological fringe. One would find even fewer warriors within the Ejercito Zapatista who would be willing to engage in intangible rhetorical battles with people whose greatest virtue is spreading their lack of understanding and knowledge around in newspapers and magazines. But the article entitled “The EZLN Is NOT Anarchist” [authored by Theodore Kazcinski] reflected such a colonialist attitude of arrogant ignorance, several of us decided to write a response to you. You are right. The EZLN and its larger populist body, the FZLN are NOT Anarchist. Nor do we intend to be, nor should we be. In order for us to make concrete change in our social and political struggles, we cannot limit ourselves by adhering to a singular ideology.

please note there is some controversy over who actually wrote this article. Although it states that it was written by Subcomandante Marcos, the source might have been an editor of the publication Green Anarchy. I am looking into it and will let people know more soon -- U.F.

update 12/12 See my comment below about the source of the article. It was not written by Marcos, but might have come from others in the EZLN (or not?) - U.F.

On November 20th, twenty-four students held a sit-in, inside Kerrey's office, refusing to leave unless he agreed to one demand; a public forum addressing his views on Iraq, and how it effects the school. Which after half an hour of negotiating, he did.

"23 Arrests for Genoa: The Wave of Repression Rolls Onwards in Italy Updated

Searches and arrests have taken place throughout Italy in the last twelve hours related to the investigation of the confrontation and property damage that occurred there during the days of the G8 summit.

The arrests were requested by the prosecuting magistrates Anna Canepa e Andrea Canciani, approved and ordered by the judge Elena D'Aloisio and carried out by the political police, Digos.

Unlike those arrested on order of the judges in the south, all of whom were released yesterday after twenty days detention, those arrested today have been charged with specific offences, including criminal damage, looting, manufacture, possession and explosive material, arson, carrying of improper arms and resistance to public officials. Amongst those arrested is a young Genovese barman Massimiliano Monai who was beside Carlo Giuliani when he was killed.

Nine people are now in custody, the others are under either house arrest or have restrictions placed on their movements and have to report to police stations.
