LOFT DWELLERS UNITE:

The LiveWork Coalition will host a community meeting with loft tenants and elected representatives Wednesday, February 20th.

Join us on Wednesday, February 20th at 7pm, to meet with loft tenants living without protection from harassment and eviction. The meeting will be held at Henry Street Settlement, Abrons Art Center 466 Grand Street in Manhattan.

WHAT IS THE LIVE WORK COALITION?

We are artists and designers living in lofts not covered under the existing Loft Law of 1980. The LiveWork Coalition was officially created when dozens of long-term tenants were evicted from their lofts in DUMBO in December of 2000. Since then, the LiveWork Coalition has received over 1,000 individual responses to an online census form for loft tenants. Under scrutiny by landlords and developers alike, the LiveWork Coalition has gained support from neighborhood businesses, arts organizations, and galleries.

We are continuing to lobby for the passage of the Next Generation Loft Law, A5580. Our coalition is committed to the preservation of our diverse communities and the continuing contributions that our communities bring to our city.

Anonymous Comrade writes "The turn out for the February 1 anti-World Economic Forum march (15,000 –20,000) surprised everyone: the cops, the media, and perhaps most of all those who had organized the demonstration. Much of the energy on the street was a direct response to the campaign of intimidation carried out by the media on behalf of the WEF and the police. The demonstration tapped into a growing disaffection with capitalism and a general discontent with globalization and corporate governance in the US. For many of those who came out, the press campaign against the demonstrators was a direct assault on civil liberties and real proof that groups like the WEF are incapable of defending their policies when confronted with the meat and bones of democratic discourse.

Did you know what the cool hunters are? Did you accidentally notice lately any advertisements with radical themes or the latest fashion that demonstrates symbols of revolution impressed you? When anti-globalization becomes a mass movement it is easily noticed by the brand companies that they don't want to loose a share from any part of the consumer pie .

Woomera 2002 : Autonomadic Caravan and Festival of Resistance

== an invitation to make the journey ==

Woomera is a remote town, 500 kms from Adelaide (Australia). It is also the centre of an economy of death, suffering and incarceration founded on the dispossession of indigenous lands.

Our humanity is obliterated in Woomera, in the concentration camp, by missiles, by nuclear weapons, by toxic waste, by colonisation, by capitalism, by fear and division.

We are making the journey to discover our humanity in the liberation of those who have been dehumanised.

We are making the journey to refuse the death, pain and confinements that are manufactured in the name of The Economy. We refuse the caging behind razor wire and the new world borders fashioned so that capital, by reserving for itself the 'right' to move around the world, can better enforce austerity, misery, the earth's destruction and the 'race-to-the-bottom'.

In 2002, each of us are making the journey in our own unique way to reveal the connections between dispossession and the enclosures; the dislocations that have occurred and are still occurring in the name of profits, warlords and empire.

We will not mimic what we go to abolish, but instead wish to open a multitude of paths toward a different world.

We invite you to make the journey with us.

"Porto Alegre, Sad Empire": An Interview with Toni Negri

By Stephane Mandard

On the eve of the World Social Forum, which will take place from the 31st of
January till the 5th of February in Porto Alegre, we have interviewed the
Paduan philosopher Toni Negri, charged with armed insurrection and currently
under house arrest.

Numerous representatives of the liberal anti-globalisation movement have
turned Empire, the book you wrote with Michael Hardt, into their 'little red
book'. Do you agree with them?

"Porto Alegre is not the Paris Commune! However, the World Social Forum is
an important moment, a place where an extraordinary generosity and militant
abilities are about to meet. I am in agreement with the spirit and the
objectives of the movement: to construct, at a global level, an opposition
to liberalism and to develop a possible alternative, within the framework of
globalisation. It is a fundamental stage in the construction of a
counter-Empire. The anti-liberal movement, on the other hand, gives
expression to many different positions. And I don't agree with all of them."

Anonymous Comrade writes:

Citibank Trial in Geneva

January 15th , 14 activists went on trial for the occupation of Citibank, Geneva, but for the public (and the media) it was "the trial of Citibank"!

The protestors were among more than 50 activists who had occupied the headquarters of Citibank last May, during a demonstration held to protest against massacres of the afro-Columbian community in Columbia by paramilitary groups. The principal function of the approximately 15,000 paramilitaries is to destroy popular organisations and unions and drive peasant, indigenous and afro-Columbian communities off lands targeted by transnationals. In a number of cases it has been proved that transnationals such as United Brands, British Petroleum or Coca-Cola have been directly involved in killings (Coca-Cola is on trial now in Florida for the assassination of its union leaders in Columbia). The activists said they had no proof that CitiBank had financed paramilitaries, but pointed out that all transnationals and foreign investors in Columbia necessarily profit from a situation in which all forms of worker and peasant organisation are ruthlessly repressed (a union person is killed every two days in Columbia and 10,000 have been declared "military objectives"). Citibank is a major investor (largest foreign and quickest growing bank in the country) which benefits in multiple ways from this institutionalised violence. It also has close ties to the CIA (for example, Montesino the ex-security head of Peru ran his narcotrafic through Citibank.)
