While readers to this site may not have any special interest in supporting either of the main U.S. political parties, it is instructive to learn just what support these corporations give to whom.

"U.S. OKs Evidence Gained Through Torture"

Michael J. Sniffen, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Evidence gained by torture can be used by the U.S. military in deciding whether to imprison a foreigner indefinitely at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as an enemy combatant, the government says.

Statements produced under torture have been inadmissible in U.S. courts for about 70 years. But the U.S. military panels reviewing the detention of 550 foreigners as enemy combatants at the U.S. naval base in Cuba are allowed to use such evidence, Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Brian Boyle acknowledged at a U.S. District Court hearing Thursday.

"Rebels Return to 'Cleared' Areas"

Scott Peterson, Christian Science Monitor

FALLUJAH — In Fallujah, US forces are going through 50,000 houses one by one. But
Iraqi insurgents are coming back.

The embers in the house were still hot from
the fire of battle when Cpl. Joshua Richard went in to view the remains
of the insurgents who killed a fellow US marine.

At the base of the stairs — the same dark place where Lance Cpl. Blake
Magaoay of Pearl City, Hawaii, had fallen in a burst of rifle fire —
Corporal Richard harangued the burnt Iraqi corpse."You got what you
wanted, didn't you?" he sneered, referring to the Marine casualties.

Panel Recommends Against Drug to Restore Female Sex Drive

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A hormone patch that works to restore a woman's sex drive should not be approved until additional studies to determine its risk, federal health advisers said Thursday.

The advisers said they were unimpressed with the number of women studied so far as well as the length of the studies.

Housing Developers Burn Down NYC Community Center

Bronx, NY December 2, 2004 — Thirty residents of Casa Del Sol, a
community center in the South Bronx, are homeless after a fire
partially destroyed their building and sent 16 firefighters to the
hospital. Residents blame ACORN, a development group, for allowing the
fire to burn five hours after police evicted the building's residents.

"The circumstances are incredibly suspicious," says former Casa Del
Sol resident Joleene Martin. "The fire happened under their watch. I
blame them for either negligence or malice. Either way, it's their
fault."

"Italy Goes on Strike Over Economy"

John Hooper, The London Guardian

Millions of Italians stopped work yesterday in protest
at the economic policies of Silvio Berlusconi's
government. A nationwide half-day stoppage crippled public
transport and shut factories and banks. Alitalia
cancelled more than 100 flights. Government departments and post offices were shut all
day. Doctors and nurse also staged an eight-hour
strike, though emergency services were maintained.

The action was originally called by the main trade
union federations, and backed by the opposition, to
protest at an austerity budget for 2005 that imposes
sacrifices worth €24bn in the form of
spending cuts and additional levies.

"A Spine for Senator Specter, More BS From Bush"
Oread Daily

Yesterday, on the morning before World AIDS Day, AIDS activists from ACT UP Philadelphia delivered a giant spine to the home of Senator Arlen Specter to demand that he find the integrity and strength to stand up to the Bush Administration’s attacks on AIDS prevention programs as well as funding cuts against the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

“Arlen Specter talks a great talk about global AIDS, but last week he caved in to pressure from the Bush Administration and cut funding for the Global AIDS Fund,” said ACT UP’s Jose DeMarco. “This cowardly cut happened during the Global Fund’s Board meeting in Tanzania, where African heads of state and people with AIDS from all over the world were insisting that a new round of grants for life-saving programs be launched.”

"Canadian Probe Over Aired Arab Slurs:

Arafat Mourners Derided on MSNBC"

Antonia Zerbisias, Toronto Star

The all-news MSNBC, which recently got the go-ahead for unrestricted access to Canada's digital dial, may have run afoul of our hate laws when its Imus In The Morning advocated dropping a bomb on Palestinians to "kill 'em all."

Both the RCMP and the federal broadcast watchdog are on the case, investigating complaints from some two dozen Canadians.

"Kerry Team Seeks to Join Fight to Get Ohio County to Recount"

Brian Faler, Washington Post

Sen. John F. Kerry's presidential campaign asked an Ohio judge yesterday to allow it to join a legal fight there over whether election officials in one county may sit out the state's impending recount.

A pair of third-party presidential candidates, who said that reports of problems at the polls on Election Day are not being addressed, are forcing the Buckeye State to recount its entire presidential vote. But David A. Yost, a lawyer for Delaware County, just outside Columbus, won a temporary restraining order last week blocking any recount there. He told the Columbus Dispatch that a second count would be a poor use of county resources. President Bush won the mostly Republican area handily, unofficial results show.

"Homeless Families Occupy Philadelphia Army Recruitment Center"

Kensington Welfare Rights Organization

Today [Tuesday, November 30], as part of their "Homes For The Holidays: Operation Bring the
Money Home" Campaign, dozens of homeless families belonging to the
Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU) have moved their Bushville
Tent City to sit in at the main Army Recruiting Office in
Philadelphia.

As police and Civil Affairs officers attempted to lock
the families out of the office, the families quickly placed signs
saying "Billions for the War, Still Nothing for the Poor" and
photographs of homeless children with the words, "Bring the Money
Home" on every available space in the office. See here for photographs and updates.
