Night of the Street Arts in Helsinki
AnttiR

Night between 25th and 26th of August was "night of the arts" in Helsinki, that is different galleries, theatres and opera are open until late night, and there are many events in the streets as well. Because street arts such as graffiti and stickers have been seriously repressed thanks to so called "zero tolerance" policy, a number of artists and political activists (from squatter spectrum, not anarchist) wanted to organise "night of the street arts". This was a festival against violence and repression unleashed by city of Helsinki and private army of FPS (Finnish Protection Service) on their payroll. Organisers preferred not to announce their affiliations, and action was claimed by no any particular group.

"Antonio Negri:

A Revolt That Never Ends"

A documentary about Toni Negri entitled "Antonio Negri: A Revolt that Never Ends" is now available via the collaborative video network V2V.

The film was made for Arte and to my knowledge is the first english-language film to recount Italy's recent revolutionary history; from Potere Operaia and the long '68 (1968-77) to autonomia operaia. Nice archival material is used, and there is an attempt to articulate the development of Negri's ideas. Whilst appreciating the effort invested by the film-makers, some criticisms must be mentioned.

"Global Warming Hits 'Tipping Point':

Siberia Feels the Heat"

Ian Sample, The Guardian

It's a frozen peat bog the size of France and Germany combined, contains billions of tonnes of greenhouse gas and, for the first time since the ice age, it is melting

A vast expanse of western Sibera is undergoing an unprecedented thaw that could dramatically increase the rate of global warming, climate scientists warn today.

Researchers who have recently returned from the region found that an area of permafrost spanning a million square kilometres — the size of France and Germany combined — has started to melt for the first time since it formed 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age.

Chaos as BA flights grounded

The Guardian

Thousands of passengers, many of them holidaymakers, saw their travel plans thrown into chaos yesterday after a walkout by British Airways baggage handlers and loading staff at Heathrow.

Five other companies - Sri Lankan Airlines, Finnair, GB Airlines, British Mediterranean Airlines and Qantas - suffered delays because they are serviced by BA ground staff. The action came at one of the busiest times of the year with BA running 550 flights a day in or out of Heathrow.

About 1,000 baggage handlers and loaders took unofficial action in support of workers at catering company Gate Gourmet who were sacked in a row over working practices. Terminals 1 and 4, those most used by BA, were the worst hit.

BA was forced to ground more than 100 short and long haul flights while a number of inbound flights were diverted to other airports. Thousands of passengers were stranded overseas by the chaos, which looks set to continue today. The airline said last night it had cancelled all flights into and out of Heathrow until at least 6pm tonight, affecting up to 70,000 passengers.

Chinese City's Rage At the Rich And Powerful
Beating of Student Sparks Riot, Looting

By Edward Cody

Washington Post Foreign Service

CHIZHOU, China -- Liu Liang, a slightly built computer student with big glasses, was home in Chizhou for summer vacation. At about 2:30 on the hot afternoon of June 26, he was pedaling his bicycle by the downtown vegetable market on Cuibai Street. Driving down the same street in his new-looking black Toyota sedan was Wu Junxing, deputy manager of a hospital in nearby Anqing. Wu, accompanied by a friend and two bodyguards, had
come to Chizhou that day to attend opening ceremonies of a new private hospital and, associates said, survey the market to judge whether he should invest in his own facility.
Liu's bicycle and Wu's shiny four-door sedan collided, sending Liu crashing to the ground. Almost immediately, witnesses said, Liu, 22, and Wu, 34, began arguing over who was at fault. In the heat of the dispute, they said, Liu damaged one of Wu's side-view mirrors, prompting Wu's
muscular bodyguards to burst from the car and beat the skinny young man senseless, leaving him bleeding from his mouth and ears.

The beating, part of a minor traffic incident on a slow Sunday afternoon, ignited a spark of anger. The spark became a riot, evolving over eight chaotic hours into an expression of rage against the Chinese Communist Party's new fascination with businessmen, profits and economic growth.

"Texas Execution"

Bernie Roddy

Gary Sterling, a black man scheduled to be executed in Texas on August 10, is not claiming innocence in the murder of a white man, 72-year-old John Wesley Carty. Sterling directed investigators to the site of two bodies after the 1988 crime.

What is at issue is the punishment, the presence of an overtly racist individual on the jury, the fact that the defense was aware of this jury member's views, and the defense's lackluster effort to have the jury consider an objective psychiatric evaluation of Mr. Sterling's mental condition at the time of the crime. Much turns on whether the person is considered a "future danger to society" and whether death seems to be the only adequate punishment. Here race becomes a clear factor in the final results of a given case.

In a post-trial affidavit the juror at issue used an inflammatory racist epithet directed at African Americans. During the trial, the defense requested that a psychiatric evaluation be made of the defendant, but the court appointed Dr. James Grigson, also known as "Dr. Death," to serve that function. The defense declined the offer. But there was no further effort to provide such an evaluation. This is a system that works by increments to exterminate certain segments of the population in the U.S., and operates along clearly racist lines.

Gary Sterling's execution on August 10 represents a frank admission that racism is alive and acceptable in the U.S. industry of capital punishment.

minutemen lose cool

The Anti-MinuteMen, No Border camp was set up in the desert scrub of Campo, just feet away from the Border Fence. From this base, anti-racists marched to the MinuteMan camps, only to find they had left to avoid the confrontation. From this spot activists intervened in press events the MinuteMen tried to have at the crest of the Pacific Crest Trail, just feet away from our campsite. People also made their presence felt to every MinuteMan car that entered the area, as our camp was just next to the main access road. Camp attendees posted their stories on San Diego Indymedia from the temporary Desert Media Center which was set up onsite.

On July 16th, the camp was joined by over 150 people from around the state and around the country. This larger group marched to the site of the planned MinuteMan meeting, only to find that it had been moved to an unknown location due to pressure. Later in the day, anti-racists and MinuteMen alike were forced out of their campsites by a brush fire. This gave the anti-racist organizers an opportunity to confront the MinuteMen at their regrouping point, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building in Campo, for an intense face to face standoff that was only stopped by police intervention after the MinuteMen retreated into the building. Throughout the night disruption techniques were used to sabotage the MinuteMan patrols, which were met with threats that they would shoot. The camp continued until Monday and actions will continue day and night until the MinuteMen leave Campo. On Sunday night the corporate media reported that the MinuteMen had given up after only one day, but later corrected that statement."
