"U.S. Congressman Says Atta Papers Destroyed on Orders"

Donna De La Cruz, Associated Press

A Pentagon employee was ordered to destroy documents that identified Mohamed Atta as a terrorist two years before the 2001 attacks, a congressman said Thursday.

The employee is prepared to testify next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee and was expected to name the person who ordered him to destroy the large volume of documents, said Rep. Curt Weldon, a Republican from Pennsylvania.

Weldon declined to name the employee, citing confidentiality matters. Weldon described the documents as "2.5 terabytes" — as much as one-fourth of all the printed materials in the Library of Congress, he added.

'St. Patrick's Four' Speak in Church
Brian Kaviar, Cornell Daily Sun

At St. Catherine of Siena Parish Center in Cayuga Heights last night, the "St. Patrick's Four" spoke along with Sister Marilyn Pray of Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester at an event titled "Civil Disobedience and Catholic Teaching."

The Four, local members of the Catholic Workers movement, await federal trial in Binghamton this Monday for entering a local military recruitment center and pouring their own blood around the vestibule two days before the start of the current Iraq War.

The event aimed to discuss the events of March 17, 2003 for which the Four await trial, as well as the larger role of non-violent civil resistance within the Catholic tradition and the Catholic Worker movement, a group founded in 1933 and noted for its efforts to protest war as well as the unequal distribution of wealth.

"United Nations Speech," Sept. 15, 2005

Hugo Chavez

Your Excellencies, friends, good afternoon:

The original purpose of this meeting has been completely distorted. The imposed center of debate has been a so-called reform process that overshadows the most urgent issues, what the peoples of the world claim with urgency: the adoption of measures that deal with the real problems that block and sabotage the efforts made by our countries for real development and life.

Five years after the Millennium Summit, the harsh reality is that the great majority of estimated goals — which were very modest indeed — will not be met.

We pretended reducing by half the 842 million hungry people by the year 2015. At the current rate that goal will be achieved by the year 2215. Who in this audience will be there to celebrate it? That is only if the human race is able to survive the destruction that threats our natural environment.

We had claimed the aspiration of achieving universal primary education by the year 2015. At the current rate that goal will be reached after the year 2100. Let us prepare, then, to celebrate it.

Friends of the world, this takes us to a sad conclusion: The United Nations has exhausted its model, and it is not all about reform. The XXI century claims deep changes that will only be possible if a new organization is founded. This UN does not work. We have to say it. It is the truth.

Show Support for Resolution, Welfare of Troops

CHICAGO (September 15, 2005) —The Chicago City Council Wednesday passed a resolution demanding the removal of US troops from Iraq. Passing by a Council vote of 29 to 9, with 12 abstaining or not voting, the resolution urges 'the United States government to immediately commence an orderly and rapid withdrawal' from Iraq. In addition to the death and suffering of the war, the resolution stressed that 'Chicago residents' share of monies appropriated for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan now exceeds $2.1 billion.'

Chicago is now the largest U.S city to take this stand. The only other major US city to pass a similar resolution is San Francisco. The Evanston, IL City Council voted against the war yesterday, and Gary, IN did so last month.

New York Anarchist Pleads Guilty in Military Recruitment Fire

New York, New York, U.S. — Twenty- year-old anarchist David Segal pleaded
guilty to felony "malicious mischief" in federal court Wednesday
morning in relation to a January 31, 2005 attempt to burn down a Bronx
military recruiting station. In return for the plea the prosecutor
gave a sentencing recommendation of 10–16 months.

The judge is not
required to abide by the recommendation and could sentence David to 10
years in prison, but David's attorney Martin Stolar, president of the
New York chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, believes that the
sentence would adhere to the prosecutor's guidelines. Additionally,
the judge could break up the sentence between jail time and home
confinement.

"Katrina Only Latest Example of Feds Withholding Environmental Data"

Society of Environmental Journalists

JENKINTOWN, Pa., Sept. 12 — It's been more than a
week since The Times-Picayune newspaper of New Orleans turned in desperation
to the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to answer a basic question:
Where are dangerous chemicals leaking as a result of Hurricane Katrina?

The paper's lead hurricane reporter, Mark Schleifstein, had been asking
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that question for days — without an
answer. So he filed a request under FOIA. Even though the federal statute
provides for "expedited review" when a situation "could reasonably be expected
to pose an imminent threat to the life or physical safety" of the public, he
still has not received a response.

Chavez Warns of Global Energy Disaster if US Invades
Venezuela

Xinhuanet View

Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez on Thursday warned of a global
energy disaster if the United States invaded his
country to seize its oil reserves. During an interview broadcast by the state-run VTV
television, Chavez said the US Defense Department is
interested in Venezuela'sOrinoco region, which has a
crude reserve of 300 billion barrels. He said the Venezuelan intelligence services have
learned of a US plan to invade his country and capture
the oil fields.

Under the US plan, code-named Balboa, a number of
ships, men and bombs will be used for invasion of the
major cities of Caracas, Maracay and Valencia,
according to the president. Chavez vowed that the US soldiers "will bite the
dust" if they invade Venezuela.

Relations between Venezuela and the United States
have been deteriorating over recent years, and Caracas
accused Washington ofsupporting an abortive coup to
overthrow Chavez in April 2002.

Chavez also accused Washington of planning to
assassinate him, which the US government has denied.

Venezuela, with a daily 2.8-million-barrel output,
is the second most important producer of crude oil in
Latin America, nextonly to Mexico. It is the region's
main exporter with 1.5 million barrels of oil being
shipped out every day.

It's becoming a monthly trend...
this one is not planning on stopping in France, but the new policy is a sort of deportation taxi service leaving England, stopping off in all
or one of the neighboring countries: France, Germany, Spain and Italy and with a final destination in the country that these guys left,
often years ago...
