Brazil's Amazon States Suffer Record Drought

Larry Rohter, New York Times

MANAQUIRI, Brazil — The Amazon River basin, the world's largest rain
forest, is grappling with a devastating drought that in some areas
is the worst since record keeping began a century ago. It has
evaporated whole lagoons and kindled forest fires, killed off fish
and crops, stranded boats and the villagers who travel by them,
brought disease and wreaked economic havoc.

In mid-October, the governor of Amazonas State, Eduardo Braga,
decreed a "state of public calamity," which remains in effect as the
drought's impact on the economy, public health and food and fuel
supplies deepens. But other Brazilian states have also been severely
affected, as have Amazon regions in neighboring countries like Peru,
Bolivia and Colombia.

Heavy Favorite in Chilean Vote Cuts Against Grain"

Monte Reel, Washington Post

SANTIAGO, Chile — Everyone in the audience was dressed in dark blue or
black. Some wore clerical collars, and most had heavy silver crosses
dangling around their necks. But Michelle Bachelet wore an electric pink
jacket that sent a clear message: She was a candidate for president, not
sainthood.

"I'm agnostic. . . . I believe in the state," Bachelet told several groups
of evangelical ministers last week. "I believe the state has an important
role in guaranteeing the diversity of men and women in Chile -- their
different spiritualities, philosophies and ways of life."

Donald Watson, Founder of Veganism, 1910–2005

Donald Watson

Founder of veganism whose dietary crusade grew to attract a quarter of a million adherents in Britain today

Donald Watson survived to the age of 95; good propaganda in his campaign to convince the world that there is nothing inherently lethal about a vegan diet. He always regarded himself as a propagandist, in the term’s non-pejorative sense. When interviewed at 92 he was pleased to report that he had lived thus far without resort to medication “either orthodox or fringe”, and with hardly a day’s illness.

"FBI Arrests Suspected Eco-Terrorists"

Paul Shukovsky, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

In a series of coordinated raids around the nation Wednesday, federal agents arrested six suspected eco-terrorists for arsons at four locations and the destruction of an electric transmission tower in the Northwest.

The arrests could mean a break in the investigation of the May 21, 2001, firebombing of the University of Washington’s Urban Horticulture Center.

Outspoken Professor to Leave Yale Faculty

Matt Apuzzo, Associated Press

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A professor who also is an outspoken anarchist has
agreed to leave Yale University this spring, dropping an appeal over
whether his termination was politically motivated.

David Graeber, one of the world's leading social anthropologists, said he
will teach two classes next semester, then take a yearlong paid
sabbatical, after which he will not return.

Czech Republic Will Decriminalize Growing of Cannabis for Personal Use

Bushka Bryndova, Legalizace

This week the lower chamber of the Czech Parliament approved a new text of the Penal Code decriminalizing growing of psychoactive cannabis and of magic mushrooms (very popular in the Czech Republic) for personal use. The new law still needs to be approved by the Senate and signed by the President. It is almost sure that the Senate will vote for it and that President Klaus would approve it too.

The new law makes a clear distinction between soft (cannabis and magic mushrooms) and hard drugs, and stipulates different penalties for their possession and for the growing of cannabis and mushrooms, which have been since a long time demanded by drug experts and activists. The penalties for hard drugs remain practically unchanged.

Hey all,

A quick report on the labor rally at NYU from Friday. The turnout was quite
good on short notice — well over 1500 folks from dozens of unions. The most
significant in attendance were Ron Gettelfinger, the president of the UAW, John
Wilhelm, the president of the hospitality division of UNITE HERE, John Sweeney —
the president of the AFL-CIO, and several city council members — all of whom
promised to do everything in their power to help GSOC win.

The President of
the Professional Staff Congress (PSC) at CUNY, Barbara Bowen, also spoke to the
importance of this fight, not only for the future of intellectual labor, but
also for the labor movement as a whole. "Winning this fight today is as
important as the air traffic controllers strike was early in Reagan's first
term," she said. A representative from the Teamsters promised to do everything
he could to back the strike.

World's First Starbucks Strike Spreads to 10 Stores

Workers from stores across Auckland walked off the job today to join the world’s first Starbucks strike, held on Auckland’s counter-culture café strip, Karangahape Rd, New Zealand.

What began as a small protest by workers from one store became a
city-wide strike when Starbucks workers heard that managers would be brought in to cover the shifts of the striking K’Rd workers.

"What began as an event to highlight the poor conditions of low pay and minimum wage workers turned into a show of solidarity and strength between Auckland’s Starbucks workers," said Simon Oosterman, SuperSizeMyPay.Com campaign coordinator.
