Radical Exchange / Solidarity with Argentina

Call for Translators

We hope that through workshops and translations about social movements in
Argentina we can begin to discuss new ways to organize in our own
communities; to talk about autonomy, popular education and direct democracyby way of the example of social movements in Argentina.
In our translations we focus on materials written by the movements
themselves, concentrating on methods of organization and strategic
principals. Our focus thus far has been the MTD (unemployed workers
(movement) Anibel Veron. However, we are hoping to expand our work to
include many other important causes in Argentina such as occupied and
collectively run factories, neighbourhood assemblies and indigenous and
campasino movements.

Call For Papers: The Postanarchism Reader

"The Postanarchism Reader: Writings at the
Intersection of Anarchism and Poststructuralism"

Edited by Jason Adams

Deadline for Paper Proposals: November 2003

This callout is for a book proposal that I am putting
together for a publisher in NYC on the intersections
between poststructuralism and anarchism; the proposal
is for it to be a sort of anthology of writings by
various radical theorists who have looked at this
issue either directly in terms of articulating or
critiquing the idea of a "poststructuralist anarchism"
(Todd May, Saul Newman, Lewis Call, etc.) or by using
both poststructuralist and anarchist theorists
together in the same essay in a way that might be
thought of as a "postructuralist anarchist critique"
of some aspect of politics, history, society or
culture.

IRAQ WAR PROFITEERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT, OTHERS OFF THE RADAR
The U.S. war on Iraq quickly shifted from an air war, to a ground war, and
now to the occupation. In occupied Iraq, some U.S. groups that organized
against the war are now organizing to monitor the corporations being awarded contracts to rebuild that country. At the same time back in the U.S. other lucrative defense contracts are underreported. On June 30, the Aerospace Testing Alliance, a partnership among Jacobs Sverdrup, General Physics Corp., and Computer Science Corp., was awarded a $2.9 billion contract for work at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee.

Here's that new cover story about autonomous media:

The Brian MacKenzie Infoshop had its long anticipated opening on May
5th after four years of planning and preparation. The group of
activists took on the project to provide as a center for radical
thought and in the D.C. area. The non-profit store sells a wide
variety of books and zines on politics, government, feminism, world
issues, anarchy, activism and other subjects that are hard to shop
for in other bookstores. They also have a growing selection of punk,
indie and folk CDs and vinyls.

The space keeps an up-to-date activism events bulletin board, provides
space for meetings and events, distributes info on local groups and
generally makes it easy to be plugged into the activist community. The
cozy basement room provides as a haven for meeting other independent
thinkers and sharing radical ideas in a friendly environment. The
Infoshop is located at 9th and P Sts. in the basement of the Arthur
Flemming Center at 1426 9th St. NW.

"Free Media Camp Vienna"

Konrad Becker, konrad@t0.or.at

The night of June 27 a broad alliance of independent media initiatives and
cultural organizations including the community radio "Orange", members of
the community media cluster Vienna (CMCV), the magazine MALMOE, the media
lab PVL, and umbrella organizations like IG Kultur, joined Public Netbase
reclaimed the streets by establishing a free media camp in the center of
Vienna.

The illegal squat started with three office containers and a large tent
set on an empty square in the middle of one of the main junctions of inner
city traffic. The Karlsplatz close to the state Opera also happens to be
one of the main hangouts for homeless and addicts and has been in the
focus of restructuring plans for considerable time.

The perspective of gentrification and a new venue for representational
culture and tourist industry has received sharp criticism.
Expropriation/privatization of the commons by neoliberal religious
practice and the attack on public space demands direct action. Austria has
been in the grip of a rightwing government for some years now, with a
substantial effort on societal restructuring which includes increased
control and withdrawal in culture. The city of Vienna which traditionally
has a social democratic majority reacts by increasing control on public
and cultural services themselves, while the political opposition parties
in town are useless or hostile towards civil society's dissent and
struggle. For Public Netbase standing accused of causing damages of 45000
euros at a recent street protest (celebrating the "day of free media"
15.June) conflict is the only response left to deal with the local
situation.

A joint act of civil disobedience by a large coalition of critical culture
is a strong signal that sleepy Vienna is waking up to claim its
birthright: free media culture.

The ceremonial opening of the camp on Friday 23:00 included speakers from
media and cultural organizations, an address from Dieter Schrage, one of
the activists from the first squat in Austria in the 70's (Arena), Ricardo
Dominguez with an electronic Zapatista declaration praising the
technologies of imagination, and ended with an open air notebook concerto
deep into the warm summer night.

Although they issued a warning, police has not been on location and
abstained from direct interference for the time being. The free media
camp, featuring a free wifi, will be a hotspot for information exchange,
workshops, events and parties for the next weeks and months -- or until
removed by brute force :)
