CALL TO MOBILIZE AGAINST THE WTO IN MONTREAL

JULY 27-30, 2003 /MONTREAL

MINI-MINISTERIAL? MEGA-PROTEST!!!

**Mobilization Against the WTO Mini-Ministerial in Montreal**

As part of the ongoing struggle against capitalism, imperialism,
patriarchy, and other forms of oppression, people are invited to
converge in Montreal on July 27-30 to oppose the World Trade
Organization (WTO). Mega-demonstrations are planned in response to
a so-called 'mini-ministerial' -- at which an exclusive group of
trade ministers will be conspiring here in Montreal to engineer a
'successful' outcome at a larger WTO ministerial to be held in
September in Cancun, Mexico.

Class War Escalates in France

Report from an anonymous participant in IMC-Lille

The social movement against the French government's planned pension reforms
has been escalating since it began in May of 2003. Hundreds of thousands of
workers took part in two general strikes and massive demonstrations
throughout the month to oppose reforms that will force people to work longer
to receive full pensions.

On Tuesday, June 3, about 5,000 people in Calais marched to the A26 highway
and were brutally attacked by riot police with batons and tear gas.

Geneva03: the Bubble Bursts

Locked away in their lakeside resort, the G8 must reckon once again with their own abject failure. Met by demonstrations and the diffuse violence produced by systemic crisis, they have no answers except escalations of that violence. That is the same as no answer at all. Their opponents, meanwhile, have no programme but to celebrate the G8's eclipse.

Summary of events, Friday May 30, Geneva

Synthesis of reports from Indymedia activists (and others ed.) coming back from the demonstration.

The day started out with happy news. The four Italian GlobalTV activists, who had previously been stopped along the French-Italian border at Montblanc, were found to be working safe and sound with their colleagues in Geneva, having made it across the Swiss border. See their work at http://www.tvglobal.org.

Wipe out IOM, WTO and WIPO

On May 4, 2003 Luca Casarini, leader of the Disobbedienti, an important component of the Italian anti-capitalist movement, was pied in New York City. With this gentle breach of etiquette, Casarini received his just desserts for the mischief he has caused to the Italian movement.

The following is a slightly amended translation from yesterday's La Republica. Thanks to A. & M. in Rome.

Mario Placanica, the carabiniere who shot dead Carlo Giuliani during the G8
in Genoa has been acquitted and will NOT stand trial. The judge of the
preliminary hearing has filed his results upon the basis that the
carabiniere 'acted in self-defence and with legitimate use of the weapon'.
The judge accepted totally the ballistic report, according to which, the
bullet that hit Carlo Giuliani was fired in the air and ricocheted off a
stone that was being hurled by one of the protestors [therefore suggesting
that the real guilt lies with another protestor].

Over the last two days, 68 people have been arrested as part of Operation
Homeland Resistance while blocking the doors of the Federal Building,
headquarters of the INS. (See homelandresistance for more
info.) This powerful protest, linking the war abroad with the war at home,
was initiated by NYC-based and people-of-color-led racial justice and
immigrant's rights activists and organizations.

Operation Homeland Resistance is asking for your support tomorrow,
Wednesday, May 7, during a third day of civil disobedience at the Federal
Building. Please show up at 10:00AM -- people are needed to help out in a
range of capacities.

"Volunteers of the Biotic Baking Brigade landed a multilayered cream and strawberry pie in the face of Luca Casarini just before he was to speak at the feminist bookstore, Bluestockings, in the Lower East Side. Casarini is the self described 'leader' of the Disobbiedienti (a current of the Italian anti-capitalist and anti-war movement that was once popular but is now not so sweet due to half-baked behavior on the part of its leader). Some examples incude: the taking over of anarchists' actions in Torino and other parts of Italy, the disruption of the Bologna Social Forum and the attempt to lead the dockworkers war resistance in Tuscany, which ended with his being driven off physically by the workers.

The doughy Pie-zano was frosted sucessfully on his way into the store where a crowd had gathered to hear a presentation on anti authoritarianism and academia. Casarini made one good point though - the movement is now as globalized as capital. One consequence of this is that self-styled 'leaders' will be held accountable for their actions and cannot escape by touring new territories and "re-branding" themselves.

Gothenburg 2001 Aftermath, an Overview -

The Summer of Resistance and the Swedish Model Gothenburg 2001

From ksvensson

The following text is based on a discussion held at an info meeting* about
Gothenburg and Genoa prisoners in March 2003.

Background: The Swedish Model

Sweden has long been regarded as a model social democratic society; where
an extensive welfare state has existed parallel with a highly developed
capitalistic economy. This peculiar situation has been the result of a
long tradition of cooperation and collaboration between the antagonistic
parties, namely the Social Democratic Workers Party, its closely allied
Lands Organisation union and the economic forces of capitalism with the
industrial giants ABB, Ericsson, SAAB and Volvo at the forefront. The
state and national ideology is based on the thought that through dialogue
and understanding, all conflicts, no matter how large or small, can be
amicably solved.

This approach of amicable cooperation and collaboration was also applied
during the planning stages of the EU Top meeting held in the second
Swedish city of Gothenburg in June of 2001. Through dialogue between
representatives of the state and the globalisation movement, the riots of
Seattle and Prague were hoped to be avoided. The local city government in
Gothenburg launched 'The Gothenburg Spirit' as a guiding premise in this
process. In return for helping with the planning for, and accommodation
of, the thousands of activists that were converging on Gothenburg, the
city government felt as if it could expect peace and tranquillity in
payment.

The Swedish police however, had a different idea of how to deal with the
situation. In line with their longstanding strategy and tactics of
dealing with radical politics, they separately forged plans for hard-
line and definite 'preventive' measures. These were not necessarily
forged with the prevention of the immediate situation in Gothenburg in
mind,
but rather preventive in relation to future expressions of radical
politics
by making an example of the current one. In Sweden, as well as in the EU
as a whole.
