"Chavez Calls Bush 'Asshole' "

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called
President Bush an "asshole" on Sunday for meddling, and vowed never to
quit
office like his Haitian counterpart as troops battled with opposition
protesters demanding a recall referendum against him.

Chavez, who often says the U.S. is backing opposition efforts to topple
his
leftist government, accused Bush of heeding advice from "imperialist"
aides
to support a brief 2002 coup against him.

"He was an asshole to believe them," Chavez roared at the huge rally of
supporters in Caracas. "Mr. Bush must know that if he gets the mad idea
of
trying to blockade Venezuela, or, even worse, of invading Venezuela, if
that
happened, the people of the United States should know that not a drop of
oil
would reach them from Venezuela, not a drop more."

The Venezuelan leader's comments came as fresh violence broke out on the
streets of the capital, where National Guard troops clashed with
opposition
protesters pressing for a vote to end his five-year rule. Military
helicopters roared in low runs overhead as soldiers fired tear gas and
plastic bullets to repel several hundred opposition demonstrators who
threw
stones and set up burning barricades in eastern Caracas late into the
night.
Troops and opposition activists also skirmished in other cities.

But the firebrand populist vowed to defeat any attempt to unseat him and
threatened to cut off oil supplies to the United States from the world's
No.
5 crude oil exporter should Washington try an invasion or trade
sanctions.

"Venezuela is not Haiti and Chavez is not Aristide," he said.

Over 100,000 supporters of Chavez marched earlier on Sunday to protest
what
they condemned as U.S. meddling in Venezuelan affairs.

We are calling for a national campaign to take
advantage of this election year to emphasize the power
of direct action and to present direct democracy as a
viable alternative to representation. This campaign
will include literature distribution, postering and
stickering, demonstrations, educational events, and
other forms of community outreach, both in our own
communities and around the Democratic and Republican
National Conventions. It will culminate in a
nationwide day of direct action on November 2,
election day.

Saturday, February 21, the National Socialist Movement and KKK will attempt to hold a national "unity rally" in downtown Raleigh. They are scheduled to park in lot 18, and to hold their rally on the south grounds of the Capitol between 2 and 4 pm. Anyone interested in learning about their beliefs or specific plans for this day can visit their website at: http://www.nsm88.com/rally/northcarolinarally.html.

Anti-racist and Anti-fascists are organizing for a counter-protest and activities of their own this day. Meet at noon at the north end of the Fayetteville Street Mall to participate. The anti-racist/pro-human rights rally will be in the Fayetteville Street Mall (a large pedestrian mall), just south of Morgan St. and south of the Capitol, which is where the Nazi rally will be. The ad-hoc anti-Nazi/Klan group requested and received a permit for a demonstration in Raleigh on Saturday. "Where Next for the Global Justice Movement?"

Baltimore IMC: If you are inclined, please provide some background information about yourself.

Mike McGuire: I’ve been involved in Latin American solidarity work since the early nineties, first getting involved in Central America issues, then Mexico and Cuba. As many in the “Global Justice Movement” (GJM), I was inspired by the Zapatista uprising of Jan. 1, 1994 and subsequently made several trips to Chiapas for solidarity work and to attend Zapatista sponsored events. Later I was inspired by London’s anti-capitalist street carnivals and took the time to travel to Seattle for the Nov. 1999 WTO ministerial. I’ve been involved in the GJM ever since, participating in the D.C. mobilizations and then helping out with the recent mobilizations in Cancun (again in protest of the WTO) and then Miami (against the FTAA).

RNCWatch has learned that the Sierra Club and 9/11 Enviromental Action are planning to stage protests outside at 5 p.m. to demand full disclosure of how the warnings about World Trade Center dust and fumes were withheld as well as to demand a proper cleanup and healthcare assistance for people who got sick.

"Next Step" Collective Seeks Political Convention Protest Contacts

Hey everyone--

A local group of activists here in Olympia [Washington] formed the Next Step Collective a few weeks ago in the hopes that we could rekindle the creative spirit that the "movement" once had, by proposing a 220 mile march from the Democratic National Convention to the Republican National Convention this summer. The attachment lays out a proposal that we would like to have dispersed as widely as possible in the hopes that we can take on this monumental project from a very diverse set of backgrounds. Please read the attachment and get back to me with any thoughts when you can. Much love and look forward to spreading the
revolution with all of you.

Hunting the Machines

Every month brought news of an increase in sabotage
despite minimal coverage in either mainstream or radical press, not least because
communiqués were rarely sent. Sabotage largely centred around projects
where ongoing daytime campaigns were underway, but some was done in solidarity
with campaigns further afield. With so many groups fighting multiple schemes
by the same companies actions often ended fulfilling both roles. ARC, for instance,
had supplied roadstone to Twyford Down and was trying to expand quarries in
North Wales and Somerset.

British magazine/review "Do or Die" has been a key forum for writing and debate in the english language circles for many years. Born out of Earth First and the struggles against road construction in the early 1990s, this was the same milieu who began Reclaim the Streets and generally mixed themselves up in any mischief that was available. In their most recent issue they announced that this was the end of the road. The publication is well worth getting a copy of not least for the end of an era which it documents. This issue opens with a long narrative review of the ten years which made the writers what they are and which I'd encourage everyone to read.

An Insurgency of Dreams

"Defend the Collective Imagination.
Beneath the cobblestones, the beach"

- Slogan daubed in Paris, May 1968

The radical ecological movement was born from the world-wide revolutionary
upsurge of the 1960s and '70s. Love of the earth and for each other has always
been with us, but in that period these feelings exploded across the world in
a way they hadn't for decades. In nearly every land people came together and
resisted. In some areas there were decisive victories for people in the battle
against power; in others, power won hands down.

The epic struggle of the Vietnamese people and the anti-Vietnam war actions
across the world; urban guerrillas across Europe; barricades in Paris; the
European squatting movement, the brutal end of the Prague Spring; the rise
of the Black Power movement.
