However it is not routine for the journalist to get drunk and reveal her true purpose whilst 'infiltrating' a publicly announced discussion on the black block. Nor to publicly refute the value of ethics. See comments attached at end. Enjoy!

Dublin Grassroots Calls European Days of Action on May Day Weekend"

Activists from the Dublin Grassroots network are calling for a European day of action in Dublin on Saturday, May 1st, as the highlight of a weekend of action from Friday April 30th, to Monday May 3rd. These days of action will focus on symbols of all that is wrong with the EU as it currently stands: militarism, neo-liberalism, fortress Europe and the EU police state. We are inviting people from all over Europe, and the world, to join us in Dublin on Mayday to show our leaders that their agenda for EU integration, driven by the wealthy and powerful, will face resistance. We will also be using the days of action to highlight local issues and campaigns which are linked to the broader problems of corporate globalisation and the EU.

We will be holding an initial planning meeting for the days of action on Saturday February 7th, at 2pm in the Teachers Club on Parnell Square. This meeting is open to all and all ideas and suggestions are welcome. This meeting will be participatory in nature, designed to give everybody a say and to involve everybody in the planning and decision making, rather than merely turning up to listen to experts. No matter how much experience or political expertise you may have, we welcome your active involvement on an equal level with everybody else.

Asheville Community Resource Center is being evicted

On Wednesday, February 4 the Asheville Community Resource Center (ACRC) received an eviction notice from our landlord over alleged unruly behavior during an event. This eviction comes to us in the context of a concerted effort to gentrify the street we reside on. well friendly neighbors have also informed us of an effort underway to get us off the street for the past few months.

For those not familiar with the ACRC we are an anti-authoritarian collective running a consensus based community center in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. We run an alternative reading room offering an extensive collection of radical literature, as well as a venue for speaking events, live music, and independent artists. (Everything from Brazilian anarchists speaking, to bioregional network meetings, to David Rovics performing).

We also house a number of community groups, including the Bike Recyclery, Asheville Global Report, Women and Transgender Health Project, Katuah Earth First!, Asheville Free School (includes 15-20 home-schooling kids), Prison Books Program, and Bountiful Cities (community gardens). This is a vital resource for our community and we cannot afford to lose it. Furthermore it is an important fight against the gentrification of our city.

In talking with the landlord it has become apparent that he is very nervous about this becoming a public issue, and is already feeling backed up against the wall after having reporters contact him. The landlord said he would get back to us on Monday. Now is more important then ever to put the pressure on! Please make calls and send emails of support for the ACRC to:

Phone: 828-255-0032
Fax: 828-251-1036
Email: mgmtprop@aol.com

Especially helpful is to mention how we are a valuable asset to the community and provide essential services to the poor etc. Thanks so much.

ps. We are also flat broke and could use any donations to help us in finding a new space if we are unsuccessful in fighting the landlord. You can send donations to:

Latest News on Genoa G8

Alomost three years after the G8 in Genoa, the truth is starting to
emerge on the tortures and beatings demonstrators were subjected to in Bolzaneto police station. On the 21st of January 2004, the daily genovese paper 'Il Secolo XIX' gave an account of a police officer and a non-commissioned officer of the police penitentiary, who had told the attorney Francesco Lalla (who had been about to close the inquiry) of generalised violence and
abuse carried out on demonstrators that had been arrested. These
declarations implicate the higher echelons - who at the time would have been informed of the facts - such as the police general Oronzo Doria and the magistrate Alfonso Sabella. With this fresh evidence, a crack in the wall of the conspiracy of silence has been opened: the new testimonies of the police officers match those of the demonstrators.

I was about to begin the prayer when a Franj threw himself upon me, seized me, and turned my face to the East, telling me, ‘That’s how you pray!’
Usamah Ibn Munqidh, Chronicler (1095-1188)

In the 11th and 12th centuries, Frankish crusaders rampaged through the Muslim regions of Asia Minor, Syria, and Palestine. Glorious, walled cities were torched while surrounding agricultural land - vineyards and olive and date groves, were reduced to fallow ground. In 1098, the barbarous armies of the west, victorious at Ma’arra, celebrated by skewering, grilling and eating Arab children. Jerusalem fell to the occidentals. Thousands of Muslims were killed in the gold-domed Al-Aqsa Mosque; Jews were sealed in their synagogue and burned alive. Today the military occupation of Iraq, though far less brutal, feels to many like a crusade.

"Lefty" Hooligan writes Beyond Unionism

Labor unions curtail the anger and rebelliousness of their members while pimping their labor to the highest bidder. Largely ineffective in defending let alone advancing real working class interests, even the most revolutionary unions serve to prop up capitalism once they gain a little power and position. Yet I hold a union card.

I’m a member in good standing of the National Writers Union, which is a branch of the United Auto Workers. AFL-CIO baby. I’ve held cards in everything from AFSCME to the IWW, none of which has made me any less dubious about unionism as a labor strategy. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in a strong, organized labor movement. I just don’t think labor unions are the best organizing tools with which to fight capitalism. I certainly don’t think they’re up to the task of creating and wielding social power based on the self-organization and self-activity of the working class as a class.

"Appeals Court Allows N.Y. Anti-Mask Law"

Gail Appleson, Reuters, Tue January 20, 2004

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled that a New
York state law barring public demonstrators from wearing masks is valid
under the U.S. Constitution and does not violate Ku Klux Klan members' free
speech rights.

The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling reverses a trial court's
finding that the state law violated the First Amendment. The three-judge
panel said the mask was not protected by the free-speech provision because
it does not convey a message independently of the robe and hood.

The first hit of the drum shatters the silence over the sun-baked fields,
ringed by reclaimed factories and several hundred organizers, activists,
artists, families, members of asambleas, unions of the unemployed, and
self-managed collectives. The burst is followed by another, then a
succession of alternating rhythms and as a band of children and the young
at heart enter the field dancing, chanting, and being cheered on by
on-lookers.

"The Old Left for Another World?
Mumbai Resistance and the World Social Forum"
Saroj Giri

The time has come for a certain Marxism to assert itself and this is possibly the Marxism of the old Leninist tradition. It is good to find that the debate between the two Marxisms has again come to the fore in the Indian context with the Mumbai Resistance taking up issue with World Social Forum. For with the WSF happening in India, all sorts of objectively dubious and opportunist forces and tendencies on the Communist left in India are finally coming out open and clear with their long hidden ideological and political bankruptcy.

Introduction

Unlike many of my other works, this piece is not about theory or ideology. It does not discuss evidence, or reasoning, or logic, as to the ideas that I believe about society. Rather, it is a confession, of the things I have witnessed, as I was a homeless person. There is some discussion of ideology and beliefs in the following pages. But, it must be understood that the topic of this paper is what I had personally witnessed while being homeless. The location of this was in southern Louisiana, in and around New Orleans (other towns include Metairie and Gretna). The time frame of this is December to March, including Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday"). And now, I tell my story...
