Brief Description

New Cultural Studies: Adventures in Theory is intended as an
authoritative guide to theory's past, present and most especially future
role in cultural studies, written from a cultural studies perspective
that is sympathetic to, but not necessarily uncritical of, 'Theory' with
a capital 'T'. The aim of the book is to reposition cultural theory
(after the attacks of the likes of Terry Eagleton) and reaffirm its
continuing intellectual, and indeed political relevance, to both
cultural studies and culture and society at large.

Everyone seems to agree! The left, the neo-Nazis, the isolationists, bringing
war to Iraq was a farce and a scam, a power-mad dash for resources that’s
just a mask for the mass murder of Iraqis and the schemes of the Neo-Conservative
cabal. Amid the fire and brimstone of the invasion, the Iraqi people are getting
nowhere, and the occupiers are clearly the oppressors in the situation. While
few would actually claim affinity with the tyrannous Saddam Hussein, opposition
to the war and occupation are inherently legitimate because people
are dying
. The Iraqi resistance is an imperfect but just response
to the Coalition’s rapacious greed for oil and never mind the former
Ba’ath parties and Islamic fascists behind the curtains, full speed
ahead! The Iraqi puppet state should be drowned in blood and the cosmopolitan
capitalism of the west should retreat from the desert; each and every glorious
beheading, the murders of collaborators and police, the assault on parasitic
contractors, each and every resistance to occupation becomes justice because
the people should rule Iraq, not the corporations.

In the past forty years, it has become easier to draw a sharp line between Ricardo’s and Marx’s theory of value and between Ricardo’s economics and Marx’s critique of political economy.


Ricardo was for Marx the “most advanced capitalist viewpoint” in political economy. Marx’s “sensuous transformative activity” is, in the "Theses on Feuerbach," the “active side developed by idealism”, and in particular by the other “most advanced capitalist viewpoint”, the work of G.F.W. Hegel (1770–1832).

The Only Possible Relationship to the University Today Is a Criminal One

"To the university I'll steal, and there I'll steal," to borrow from Pistol at the end of Henry V, as he would surely borrow from us. This is the only possible relationship to the American university today. This may be true of universities everywhere. It may have to be true of the university in general. But certainly, this much is true in the United States: it cannot be denied that the university is a place of refuge, and it cannot be accepted that the university is a place of enlightenment. In the face of these conditions one can only sneak into the university and steal what one can. To abuse its hospitality, to spite its mission, to join its refugee colony, its gypsy encampment, to be in but not of — this is the path of the subversive intellectual in the modern university.

might ease or stay his deteriorating health, has now

postmodernists. As Bakunin,
Kropotkin and Malatesta have been declared obsolete,
Nietzsche has
replaced them as an icon for certain anarchists.
Indeed the question has
often been asked, was he an anarchist himself?

In the '70s, May Day was a rancid and miserable celebration. Rancid,
because workers' struggles and politics, like life in general, were
tightly dilated. In those days — totally devoid of happiness
— there was only the union, the weak point of the Keynesian state.


The unions found their voice, sometimes rabid and solitary, in their role as legal representatives of the
commodity 'labor power': the sole true strategist in modern
industrial societies. But the workers in struggle, who wanted to abolish
precisely that commodity (inflating its price until it
exploded), did not march in the name of a new model of
development. As adults, it scarcely seems reasonable to lose more time behind
these Wisemen.

In the late 1980s, the Italian President Francesco Cossiga described Antonio Negri as "a psychopath" who "poisoned the minds of an entire generation of Italy's youth". Negri has been accused of murdering Italy's former Prime Minister, Aldo Moro, and of being il grande vecchio — the grand old man — behind the Red Brigades, one of the most notorious terror groups to attack post-war Europe until al-Qa'ida. In prison he co-wrote an anti-globalisation bible, Empire. Now he's out, and he's heading to London. I am waiting patiently at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, in the shadow of Buckingham Palace, to have my mind poisoned.

At this revealing moment, it is interesting that

philosopher should find in Socrates his proper
precursor, that he should turn to Socrates to
understand that, at the age of 74, he still did not
quite know how best to live.

1. The Thisness of Time and Production

The Grundrisse is a work about time, and it is so in a fundamental sense. This means that time is the most fundamental category of the Grundrisse. Again, it means that time is the subject of Marx’s critique of political economy–subject in the double sense of subject-matter (or object) and of ground (or foundation). This becomes evident as soon as one opens the Grundrisse : "The object before us, to begin with, material production" (Marx 1973, 83). This is how Notebook M starts.

But material production is time, both as objectified and as subjective labor. The tense of this time, which is immediately labor, is alternatively the perfect or present tense: "The difference between previous, objectified labor and living, present labor here [i.e., in the accumulation of capital] appears as a merely formal difference between the different tenses of labor, at one time in the perfect and at another in the present" (465-466; brackets added). Material production is, then, time both as having been produced and as producing, as having become and as becoming. The difference between these two modalities is the difference between the substantial form of capital and living labor, between the capitalist and the worker. It is a difference, which presents itself immediately as antagonism and opposition. It is, in fact, the structural constitution of the class struggle.
