"Who Will Shape the Agenda?"

Watch the Discussion "Who Will Shape the Agenda?," direct from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland

The global economy is in the midst of a historic shift. The integration of economies and markets around the world impacts the work of every significant actor — from government to the media to business. However, managing the balance of power and co-dependencies between the three can in large part define the strength and health of a modern democracy.

How are the responsibilities of government, the media and business leaders shifting?

Networked Politics:

Rethinking Political Organisation

Rethinking Political Organisation in an Age of Movements and Networks
A reader produced by TNI, Transform! Italia, IGOP and Euromovements
January 2007

Networked Politics is the product of a collaborative research process for rethinking political organisation in an age of movements and networks. In a world where the traditional institutions of democratic control have been weakened by an unconstrained global market and superpower military ambitions, it uncovers diverse forms of resistance with the potential to create new institutions for social change. The authors set out the principles upon which such transformations should be based, and the challenges that stand in the way of their realisation.

The discussion is then pursued along four interrelated lines of inquiry. These examine social movements, including their development of new forms of knowledge and organisation; progressive political parties, and attempts to bring about transformative forms of political respresentation; the dangers and opportunities facing the development of political institutions in a network society; and the potential of new techno-political tools for facilitating and reconceiving political organisation. A series of case studies are also offered, drawing critical lessons from the experience of the German Green Party; the 2006 French mobilisation against the controversial CPE employment law; and an extended discussion on 'open source as a metaphor for new institutions'.

will gather with us to celebrate this wonderful occasion.

Please join us for food, conversation, drinks, and socializing.

Legalize Dance in New York City
Feb. 9, 2007

On Feb 9–10, 2007 Metropolis in Motion is creating a 24-hour Dance Marathon to raise awareness about Cabaret Laws.

Check out web site: here>

Metropolis in Motion was founded in 2006 by New York City residents who believe that our right to dance should not be restricted.

Ever since NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani created the Nightclub Enforcement Task Force in 1997 to enact his "Quality of Life" campaign, the city has been waging a war against nightlife culture and industry. The most lethal weapon in the city's arsenal aimed against nightlife are Prohibition-era laws known as the "Cabaret Laws".

As clubs, bars and lounges are fined, padlocked and shut down, citizens lose places that foster social interaction and artists have fewer places to express themselves. The city is losing a vital part of its cultural identity and an economic engine that fuels a variety of city businesses.

We are fighting to legalize dancing in New York because:

Quilombo Films is previewing "Quilombo Country," a new film about modern-day quilombos, on Monday, January 15 at 7pm at Tribes Gallery. This special preview screening features the film’s new narration by hip hop legend Chuck D of the band Public Enemy. The director, Leonard Abrams, will be present for a Q&A directly following the screening.

Brazil, once the world's largest slave colony, was a brutal and deadly place for millions of Africans. But many thousands escaped or rebelled, creating their own communities in Brazil's untamed hinterland. Largely unknown to the outside world, today these communities, known as quilombos, struggle to preserve a rich heritage born of resistance to oppression.

Northeast Anarchist Consulta in Preparation for May Actions

Calling All Anarchists and Anti-Authoritarians:

Converge at the Northeast Anarchist Consulta this February 24th and 25th
to strategize and organize for a massive Week of Resistance this May, from
our participation in May Day (May 1st) and the movement for migrant
workers' rights to the Biotech Convention (coming to Boston May 6-9) and
the movement in defense of the earth.

This new year presents us with the opportunity to come together - "red,"
"green," and anarchists of all stripes - and fight back against the
political and corporate machine that is strangling human society and all
life on this planet. We must realize that these struggles are in fact one
struggle: for our lives, our rights, our future, and for liberation.

This spring, the frost will crack and melt, fresh colors will bud on the
trees, and bright green stems will push their way up through the soil to
blossom underneath the warm sun. We, too, anarchists of the Northeast,
will awaken to a spring of opportunity, a spring of solidarity, a spring
of fresh energy and direction, and a spring of escalating resistance.

Sixth General Assembly

Calling all anarchists, anti-authoritarians, horizontalists, and grassroots activists! Come join us as we plant the seeds of the anarchist century!

Mark your calendars: You are cordially invited to the Sixth General Assembly of the New York Metro Alliance of Anarchists / Alianza de anarquistas del área metropolitana de Nueva York (NYMAA).

Date: Sunday, January 21, 2007
Time: 2:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Place: Sixth Street Community Center, 638 East 6th Street between Avenues B and C in Manhattan.

In the midst of a deep, dark winter, what better way to spend a grey Sunday afternoon than gathering together with scores of like-minded revolutionaries who are organizing to build a better world?

On March 4, 2006, 65 radicals, revolutionists, and anarchists came together in an historic gathering and founded an explicitly anarchist organization--the first of its kind in NYC in nearly 100 years! Since then, much has been accomplished, yet much more must be done in order to forge a lasting antiauthoritarian presence on the streets of New York.

In order for the ideas of horizontalism and revolution to firmly take root among broad swaths of people, anarchists need to band together for the purpose of initiating and nurturing a wide range of projects. NYMAA's aim is to build momentum and contribute to a genuine movement of resistance and liberation that can ultimately uproot the brutality of authoritarianism, capitalism, and oppression.

Along those lines, NYMAA has arguably initiated the largest upswing in anarchist organizing that this city has seen in a very long time, marking as its accomplishments a number of ongoing projects, groups, and campaigns. This is truly a historic time, as we continue to build anarchist communities and projects while connecting and facilitating communication with other radical and revolutionary groups and organizations.

You can read more about NYMAA and familiarize yourself with its basic organizational structure (we strongly encourage this) by visiting: http://www.nymaa.org

Proposals and other agenda items for the General Assembly are welcomed. Please e-mail them along with any RSVPs (especially if you're bringing
kids!) to: nymaa-comms [at] riseup [dot] net

Food and beverages, as well as childcare, will also be provided.

Justseeds.org Needs Your Help!

Josh MacPhee

1. Last week the company that was filling Justseeds' online orders (including hosting the webstore, processing payments, and shipping products), unexpectedly went bankrupt, immediately shutting down Justseeds' online store. This was a complete shock to me, as the fulfillment company was going through a transition of ownership, but no one had mentioned the possibility of collapse or bankruptcy. On top of shutting down distribution, the fulfillment house owed Justseeds upwards of $10,000 (most of that money in turn was owed directly to artists and zinesters who sold items on the site).

This has come at a terrible time — the holiday season is hardly the time to close up shop. Additionally, justseeds was in the process of transitioning to become an artist/worker owned and operated collective, with over a half dozen artists linking together to make a much more exciting and dynamic website and store. All the artists involved would make the site the primary venue for distributing their work, bringing dozens of new prints, posters, books and zines to the site. We also had plans of merging with the political street art website VisualResistance.org to add a political art blogging feature. Now this is all in jeopardy. The formation of our new collective entity will be near impossible if we are saddled with such a huge debt before we even get off the ground.
