New Afrikan Anarchist Prisoner Ali Khalid Abdullah Denied Parole

New Afrikan Anarchist Prisoner Ali Khalid Abdullah Denied Parole,

Accused of "Terrorist Activity"

By the International Campaign to Free Ali Khalid Abdullah

KINCHELOE, MI: Ali Khalid Abdullah, a New Afrikan
Anarchist Political Prisoner, was denied parole for
the sixth time yesterday. Ali received notice of this
decision (which contained no substantial justification
for a denial of parole) shortly after being told by
authorities at Kinross Correctional Facility that a
leaflet sent to him from Spain, allegedly advocating
armed attacks on government institutions, was rejected
by the prison mailroom. This decision from the
Michigan Parole Board also comes just weeks after Ali
was labeled a "suspected security threat" implicated
in "possible terrorist activity" by the Michigan
Department of Corrections (MDOC).

Ali attended the sixth parole hearing of his 12 year
imprisonment on February 7, 2002. Initially, Ali
described this hearing as a "positive experience,"
which left him and his supporters optimistic towards
the possibility of his release. At that time Ali was
being held at Thumb Correctional Facility, in Lapeer
MI, where he had received his Bachelor's Degree from
Spring Arbor College, headed a drug program called
"People Against Drugs", and had good discipline record
and no reason to believe that he had any sort of
problems with the local prison authorities.

A strange turn of events occurred, however, a few days
after his parole hearing. On February 12, a question
arose in the prison mailroom at the Thumb Correctional
Facility, as to whether Ali should be allowed to
receive a leaflet mailed from Puerto Rico containing
slogans such as "Smash Sexism" and "Fuck Patriarchy."
While it was eventually decided that he should be
allowed to receive this letter, Ali was later
subjected to an unusual and unexplained cell search,
in which many of his letters, literature, and
photographs where confiscated.

Later on the evening of the twelfth, Ali was called to
the Control Center at the prison and was given "a
notice of intent to conduct an administrative
hearing." The notice indicated what materials were
confiscated and stated that Ali was "a suspected
security threat, [indicated by] group literature and
photographs depicting possible terrorist activity,
[and] uprising against institutions and government
[and] organized from several countries."

An hour after receiving this notice, Ali was told to
"pack up and get ready to be transferred." The next
day (February 13) he was moved to Kinross Correctional
Facility, a state-run institution in Kincheloe,
Michigan, where he is currently being lodged in a cold
gymnasium (Ali must wear a coat all day) with 140
other inmates who are allowed shared access to only 4
toilets.

All of the above mentioned incidents are highly
suspicious and give substantial reason to suggest that
Ali is being persecuted because of his political
activity, his Muslim name, and/or his Muslim faith.
As of this writing, neither Ali nor any of his family,
friends, or supporters have been given any reasons by
the MDOC as to why Ali was suddenly transferred just
days after his parole hearing. Nor have any of the
above received substantial reasoning for his being
labeled a suspected "security threat" and "terrorist".
Ali has also yet to be subjected to the
"administrative hearing" mentioned in the notice he
received on February 12. Additionally, Ali's
supporters have yet been presented with evidence that
the leaflet allegedly sent to Ali at Kinross
Correctional Facility from Spain advocating armed
attacks actually exists. All of the implications
regarding Ali being connected to "terrorist activity"
are completely baseless, however, even if this letter
was indeed sent to him by someone other than an
agent-sabeteaur. These accusations as well as Ali's
denial of parole seem to be based soley on a political
agenda.

It should also be noted that these events are
occurring within the context of the U.S. led "War On
Terrorism" which has created an atmosphere in which
the U.S. government is seeking to label all opposition
to it's military and economic hegemony (legitimate or
otherwise) as "terrorist". Knowing this, it should
come as little surprise that a Black Muslim Anarchist
who has written extensive critiques of the U.S.
government and it's response to September 11 (see
free ali) is among those facing
state repression.

ABOUT ALI KHALID ABDULLAH

Ali Khalid Abdullah is a New Afrikan Political
Prisoner in Michigan, USA. He has been incarcerated
since 1990. Ali has a Bachelor's degree from Spring
Arbor College, ran the People Against Drugs program at
Thumb Correctional Facility and is an
internationally-published author. He is serving a
10-to-20-year sentence for "assault with intent to rob
while armed." This trumped-up charge stems from action
he took against a high-level drug dealer, who allowed
a runner to rape the 11-year-old daughter of a
customer as payment for the customer's drug debt.
