New York Metro Anarchist Alliance
Fourth General Assembly, July 22, 2006
You know it's really summer when school is out, the World Cup is over, the bulls
of Pamploma have run (they scored big this year), and anarchists can celebrate the
Fourth of July — the Fourth General Assembly of NYMAA — The New York Metro Alliance
of Anarchists — that is!
There may not be any fireworks, but hopefully our agenda
and hot new format will get you fired up. What better way to beat the heat and show
off your svelte summer physique than spending an afternoon with a crew of really
cool people! If you've been to past GA's, this one will be quite different. The first hour or
so will be reserved for an informal mutual aid/idea-share coupled with breakouts
that will allow people to drum up interest for non-NYMMA projects, generate proposals
for the "formal" GA portion, participate in a mini-workshop on consensus
process, chat with the point people for the various NYMAA grouplets, or just make
out (what else is summer for?).
After a break, we'll be going into the actual GA portion of the afternoon, during
which weÂ’ll get the low-down on all the exciting work that our various borough locals
and working groups (including radical health, anti-war, labor, and global outreach)
have been and will be doing, as well as the presentation of new proposals (which
include the organizing of a NYC anarchist bookfair and the creation of a Local Action
Network and announcements of relevance to the anarchist community.
As always, food and drink, as well as childcare (please RSVP if you're bringing
children!), will be provided.
When: Saturday, July 22nd, 1:00 - 5:00 P.M.
Where: Church of the Ascension, 221 West 107th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and
Broadway in Manhattan. In the basement.
How: Take the 1 train to 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway, walk South and East. Or,
B or C trains to 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway, walk South and West.
Who: The New York Metro Alliance of Anarchists (NYMAA) is a broad organization of
anarchists and anti-authoritarians who live in the New York metropolitan area.
Why: NYMAA is a social revolutionary organization, thus our ultimate aim is to eradicate
all forms of authoritarianism, hierarchy, and domination and help build a genuinely
liberatory, self-managed, directly democratic society. To that end our immediate
aim is to bring anarchists together on a common plane of struggle for the purpose
of growing and expanding the movement and spreading our ideas.
NYMAA is now in it's fifth month of existence, over 100 members strong, and we are
now a regular presence on the streets of New York, demonstrating in support of workers
and immigrant rights, in solidarity with other movements struggling against oppression,
and defending free speech and a free press. We are also developing mutual aid services
that will be available to the greater community.
Organized anarchism is needed now
more than ever, so come and see what we're all about!
In order for the ideas of horizontalism and revolution to firmly take root among
a broad cross-section of people, anarchists need to band together for the purpose
of initiating and nurturing a wide range of projects. NYMAA's aim is to build momentum
and contribute to a genuine movement of resistance and liberation that can ultimately
uproot the brutality of authoritarianism, capitalism, and oppression.
NYMAA is in the process of forming, building, and growing local "chapters"
and working groups, thereby gradually planting the seeds of capitalist destruction.
You can read more about NYMAA and familiarize yourself with its basic organizational
structure (this is strongly recommended) by visiting: here.
