Zapatista Fair Trade Shopping Tour

Bay Area, Dec. 3-4, 2005

Zapatista women's crafts will be on sale in San Rafael and San Francisco, December 3 and 4. Proceeds from these fair trade shopping events help to support economic development projects in Chiapas, Mexico.

The program includes Mayan dance performances by Grupo Jaranero Chan Kajal in Marin and Grupo Jaranero Mayab and Grupo Jaranero Orgullo Yucateco in San Francisco.

A video message will be shown from Mujeres por la Dignidad, the women’s cooperative of Zapatista indigenous weavers whose art will be available for purchase. Speakers will discuss the Zapatista struggle for indigenous rights, the impact of globalization on indigenous people in Mexico, and the movement to promote fair trade and social justice. Gabriela Martinez López, a sociologist and researcher with the Center for Political Analysis and Social and Economic Research in Chiapas, is traveling across California as part of the tour titled "Women Confronting Globalization: Cultural Resistance, Fair Trade and Human Rights." Ms. López will discuss the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and collective rights of indigenous communities.

Jennifer Miller, alternative economy coordinator for the Mexico Solidarity Network, will present an update on the twelfth anniversary of the Zapatista uprising and the progress of their struggle against neoliberalism.

On Saturday, December 3, the Fair Trade Shopping Tour will be open from 5-7 PM at the Canal Welcome Center, 141 Alto Street, San Rafael. On Sunday, December 4, from 7-9 PM the Tour will be at the Mission Presbyterian Church, 3261 23rd St. at Capp, San Francisco. A $5-10 donation is requested for each event. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Both events are co-sponsored by Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas and the Mexico Solidarity Network. For information, please call 415/924-3227, or email mitf@igc.org.
