Activist School and Youth Retreat, Manitoba, August 17-21, 2005

Manitoba Activist School and Youth Retreat
Manitoba, August 17–21, 2005

The Youth Activist Retreat and the Activist School is now accepting registrations for their joint event being held in Manitoba this summer.

The event is a 5-day retreat for 75 youth (16–30ish) interested in learning, sharing, and discussing ideas about social justice and progressive social/political change. The first stream is aimed at people who want to learn about different struggles and issues, such as Globalisation, Racism, Feminism, War and Peace, and the Environment. This stream will be similar to past Youth Activist Retreats held in Manitoba over the last 5 years.

The second stream is designed for people who are working for change and are looking to discuss strategies for accomplishing their goals. This stream will include workshops such as “How Does Social Change Happen?”, “How to Build Effective Coalitions”, and “Activism and the State”.

Workshops will be facilitated by a variety of individuals, included local organisers, educators and activists, as well as some special guests from out of province including Judy Rebick, Author, and Editor of Rabble.ca.

In addition to the Workshops, each participant will join a working group where they will meet daily to learn a particular skill and put together a project. Working groups will include Radio, Zines, Video, and Theatre among others.

The event will be a great opportunity to learn a bunch of neat stuff and network with other youth from across the country. We already have participants registered from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec. Travel subsidies are available for northern and rural participants.

There is no registration fee for the retreat. Enough funds have been raised to assure that all costs are covered, including accommodations and meals. All that is expected is your time and commitment. Participants are expected to stay for the entire duration of the retreat. Space is limited, so register soon!
