US Intervention Threats Denounced in Bolivia

Anonymous Comrade writes:
"La Paz, May 24 (Prensa Latina) The leader of Bolivia´s Movement toward Socialism (MAS), Evo Morales, has issued a call for unity to defend national sovereignty in the face of threats of US intervention in this country.

Bolivian Government Denounces Destabilization Attempts

In a mass meeting held Monday to demand a constituent assembly to unite and transform Bolivia, Morales condemned continous threats and accusations by George W. Bush administration officials against the popular movement in this nation.

He sustained that Washington tends to criminalize social protests, which he defended as a legitimate instrument of struggle and civil rights to change current neoliberal policies.

Washington practices an interventionist policy expressed through the arbitrary concept of “preemptive war,” which it applied to Iraq under the false pretext that it had weapons of mass destruction, Morales said.

In the case of Bolivia, he stressed, the United States accuses social movements of being narcoterrorists in order to intervene. That is why it is so important, he said, to become aware of the need for unity to defend national sovereignty.

The MAS leader agreed with executive secretary of Central Obrera Boliviana (main trade union organization, COB in Spanish), Jaime Solares, when he voiced his group´s solidarity with Cuba and Venezuela. He added that these countries make it possible to have liberty and dignity without foreign domination.

The danger of a US intervention in Bolivia was pointed out also by vicepresident of the Assembly of Human Rights, Guillermo Vilela, when he called for a nacional dialogue to find solutions to the prevailing severe crisis.

Vilela underlined it is urgent to open a space for understanding in the face of threats by the military brass and political authorities of the United States.
