May Day in Santiago, Chile
This May 1st, 45,000 people marched in the streets of Santiago in memory of the 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago. During the march, there were diverse political movements including anarchists. The march ended in the Plaza Los Héroes where Arturo Martínez, president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), spoke to the crowd. While speaking to participants, Martínez announced that if the Chilean congress continues passing laws contrary to labor rights a strike will commence for 48 hours.
At this point, the festivities erupted into confrontations with Santiago police. During the main action, the Brazilian Embassy was attacked with stones. Brazil currently has political prisoners who are members of the Movimiento Izquierdista Revolucionario (MIR). A police motorcycle was also burned, and two police officers were injured in the confrontation. As a result of the confrontations, over 33 people were detained and traffic was blocked for an hour.
After the march, many members of the antiauthoritarian movement met in a local park for a festival and community event. There many collectives present including an anarchist school, anarchist publications, and anti-military recruitment organizations. The event also included entertainment and music from the local community. The overall spirit was positive for the struggle and formation of a new world. At one particularly tense moment, police arrived at the event with armored cars and riot gear. After some time, the majority of the police left, and those who remained were witnesses of the struggle for a more just world.
