Rally to Support Critical Mass Bike Rides and Free Expression, New York City, April 29, 2005

Rally to Support Critical Mass Bike Rides and Free Expression
Friday, April 29th 5:30, Union Sq. Park, New York City

NYC's Police and Parks Departments have just issued summonses to four people associated with the Critical Mass bicycle rides and are asserting that, not only are un-programmed group bike rides a crime, or any celebratory or other gathering of more than 20 people in a park, without a permit, but most chillingly, that ANNOUNCING THE LOCATION (Union Square) AND TIME (7:30 P.M. ON THE LAST FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH) OF ANY SUCH UNAPPROVED EVENT CONSTITUTES A CRIME. It is not clear at this time if publications reporting the event as news are also committing a crime, although those listing it probably would be. Mentions of this monthly occurrence on websites is also specifically prohibited.

If this attempted mugging of dissent and other insults to the U.S. Constitution bother you, please show up to the rally, on skates, feet or bike, to support those who have been arrested for riding their bikes, from 5:30-7:30 P.M., prior to the next ride, Friday April 29th. Any ride will only take place after the rally, so attendees should not be risking arrest simply for attending this political event. What happens to cyclists participating in the ride, after the event, is unknown, since 37 people were arrested in March. This took place after some adjoining streets were closed, and 50 bikes, some belonging to people who were having dinner nearby, were sawed off poles.

Express your disgust with a City administration that continues to target and send to jail, responsible and concerned individuals, for the crime of riding a bike, and living to talk about it. The Police are only supposed to enforce laws, not to make them, AND TO UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION. Cyclists' real offense is their determined and joyful questioning of the status quo, it's cargo of oversized and dangerous machines*, its illegal arrests, seizures and gag orders.

STILL WE RIDE

and talk, and publish, and broadcast, and blog and meet.

* March's ride was on the same day that the NYC Auto Show opened, here in the "Irony Capitol of the World," continuing, in the words of its official spokesperson, "America's love affair with the automobile".
