Media EmergenC Gathering

Oct. 6-9, 2004, San Diego, CA [anti-NAB]

In San Diego, California, we are suffocating from media
pollution. Hence, San Diego
Indymedia is organizing an alternative media conference called Media EmergenC. It is a counter conference to the
NAB's Radio Road Show which is being held in San Diego Oct. 6-8. Our
counter conference is October 6-9. Please see http://www.mediaemergenc.org
for details.

We would like to invite all to San Diego to speak/act/teach/perform on a
media topic. The topic could be corporate mediatization, the death of
public space, iraq, oil, greed, love, advertising, independent music,
quesadillas, Bush, or whatever you want. As far as the appearance date,
we are flexible at this point. We are looking for both speakers and
workshop leaders. The workshops include, but are not limited to the
following:

Pirate/independent radio (broadcast and streaming),

Branding in media, Independent television (broadcast
and streaming), Activist Marketing, Alternative Publications,

Culturejamming/Street tactics, Framingthe Argument, Freelance Journalism,

Blogging/New Media/Wiki concept, GNN (Guerilla News Network) model,

Calling in or appearing on talk radio.

We have gotten support from Reclaim the Media in terms of notes and
outreach materials from their counter conference 2 years ago. We have
also had some help from DeeDee Halleck one of the founding members of
the San Diego IMC.

The last Anti-NAB conference (www.reclaimthemedia.org) in Seattle of
2002 was a huge success, with concerts, panels, workshops, film
screenings, actions, and activites all over the city. An estimate of
1000-1500 people attended. Our conference is striving to for those
numbers. Right now, we estimate that anywhere from 250-1000 are coming.

During the week, we plan on having a mock awards ceremony and a free
independent music concert outdoors in the streets. There is no central
protest planned, but there is a network of autonomous media/street
actions being prepared by different groups. On saturday the 9th, at the
World Beat Center, a multicultural political/art venue next to San
Diego's Balboa Park, there will be a whole range of speakers, panels, and
workshops occuring. This would be the best day for you to speak. For now,
we have:

- DeeDee Halleck (Paper Tiger TV/IMC San Diego)

- Roger Horwitz (Professor UCSD - Work focuses on media
consolidation/control)

-David Barsamian (http://www.alternativeradio.org

- radical media activist)

- Daniel Price (http://www.abusedbythenews.com)
- Fred Lonidier (labor issues activist/"Labor Link TV)

- Fidel Rodriguez (KPFK radio - wants to do a radio
production/activism workshop)

- Eric and the Gadabout Film Festival kids (http://www.gadaboutfilmfest.com
-
traveling independent film festival.

- Peter Victor Rodrigo (http://www.rodrigo-ny.com/home.asp - political
artists

Along with the speakers, we are having an independent media fair, a kind
of carnival for the indymedia crowd to gather, strategize, meet, perform,
and exhbit their work.

The Media EmergenC conference is being spearheaded by San Diego
Indymedia (www.sandiego.indymedia.org), but Grrl Zines-a-go-go and
Radioactive Radio San Diego are also heavily involved. I am a
volunteer/organizer for San Diego Indymedia, and part of RadioActive
Radio and the Organic Collective of San Diego. We are trying to show the
people of San Diego the fatal crisis of our media, and the connections
between privitization, war, information, public space, and democracy.

If you cannot attend but know of someone that could speak at our
conference please let us know. Also, if you know of any short term
funding sources to help us with travel expenses for our speakers, that
would be extremely helpful.

We need more tactical media and electronic civil disobedience at our
conference. The Media EmergenC conference hope to go beyond the
ritual disavowal of corporate media, and push itself further into the
realm of digital resistance. If you are in solidarity with us, but can't
make it, please respond anyway. A call to hack the airwaves might be in
order that week.

Please feel free to spread the word to any others who might be down.
