We are pleased to announce that we will offer the "Peaceworker Bootcamp" this summer!!
We've had very strong and positive feedback to the design and unique features of the Camp — to the proposed rural setting, to it's low tech and realistic flavour.
After an extensive scouting mission we have secured a beautiful, rugged piece of land in an old mountain range two hours west of Ottawa. That's where we'll be holding the Peaceworker Bootcamp.The six day Peaceworker Bootcamp will be offered on four occasions this summer:
Sunday May 30 to Friday June 4;
Thursday June 24 to Tuesday June 29;
Sunday July 18 to Friday July 23; and
Sunday August 8 to Friday August 13.
We have developed an exciting week that will be both a practical learning experience and a lot of fun.

What is the Peaceworker Bootcamp?
The Peaceworker Bootcamp is a 6 day hands-on learning experience in the Canadian wilderness for people who are or wish to become peaceworkers.
Why come here?
The Peaceworker Bootcamp will introduce participants to the knowledge and skills necessary in preparing for voluntary or paid work in the fields of humanitarian, peacebuilding, and development assistance. The instructors know their stuff, having years of experience in conflict settings and war zones. The training takes place in a Canadian wilderness setting that gives participants an experience of the conditions similar to what they might find in a UN or NGO compound in a developing country or war zone. That is, no frills. And most importantly, participants are individually assessed for suitability to pursue their interest in working for justice and peace, at home or abroad.
Who should come here?
-Anyone who is planning to become a peaceworker, and wishes to gain insight into the lifestyle, challenges, opportunities, and skills needed.
-Anyone who would like a basic experience in a safe setting to better prepare them for living and working in a war zone.
- Anyone returning from international exchanges or treks abroad, or short field visits and who wish to share their experiences and gat assistance that will equip them for the challenges they may face next time.
- Anyone who wishes to begin their preparation for their first field deployment.
What will I learn?
-A broad orientation and introduction to the peacebuilding, humanitarian, and development fields and the types of jobs and experiences that are possible
-Leading edge theory on reducing political violence including the transformation of power in violent conflict
-Where and how you are personally best fitted for making changes towards peace
-How to function more comfortably in a low-tech environment
-How to improve personal security: including situational analysis and risk assessment
-The importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity: including relating with local staff and the local community, and dealing with culture shock
-Map and compass reading (including optional nighttime team navigation exercise)
-Emergency wilderness survival: fire, water.
-Working Under Fire:
A. Key Contact Skills (negotiating skills, liaison and building trust, neutrality, transparency, flexibility and adaptability, accountability)
B. Self Care Skills (understanding individual limitations and personal need for healing, dealing with vicarious trauma, down-time, managing stress, coping with fatigue)
-Teambuilding and leadership training: participants will be run through various "live-fire" exercises aimed at increasing the skills of building and leading an effective team.
Alternative Offerings:
-Landmine awareness training: identification of some typical landmines, how to identify landmine fields, how to get out of a landmine field.
--Driving skills for hostile terrain and basic vehicle maintenance.
How much does it cost?
The all inclusive cost is $1200 Cdn. per participant.

Other important details
This is a low-tech environment. There will be no phones, fax, or email. The Peaceworker Bootcamp site is also out of cell phone range. (any emergencies will be handled by our off-site office)
We will be outdoors the entire time; this means living in tents, dining outside, and having all lectures and lessons outside as well. As part of your "grounding" you will be asked to share some of the camp maintenance tasks."
