This week's events began with Telemundo, the major US Spanish Language Television, broadcasting the news which uncovered new findings that incriminate the SOA/WHISC during a live television interview with SOA Watch spokesperson Adrian Boutureira.
Shorty after the show aired, hundreds of visits on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC scheduled by grassroots organizers from around the country were taking place to demand the closure of the SOA.
Join the National Call-In Day to add your voice to the hundreds raised here in DC. If you were unable to travel here today, we still need your actions and your words: call today to demand that the SOA be closed (Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121).
Forward this to friends and check our website to find out the Action A Day Campaign
that you can also join in order to broaden the scope of our actions this week and make our lobbying more effective. (Action a Day Campaign: Action a Day)
UPDATE FROM DC
After a weekend of intensive lobby trainings, direct action and anti-oppression workshops, the SOA Watch Spring Mobilization and Lobby Days are in full swing.
People from across the country are bringing the new research findings to Congress to educate their representatives and senators and participating in direct action on the streets of Washington, DC to let Congress know that we will not stop until the school is closed. Call in to help amplify the voices of those who traveled to Washington, DC and heighten the attention that the office is giving to the SOA/WHISC.
Yesterday morning, hundreds of congressional staffers, interns, tourists, and commuters who were on their way to House and Senate office buildings in DC passed by scenes of massacre reenactments. Activists dressed as SOA graduates in military
uniforms led a group of bound and blindfolded "SOA targets" to the exit of the Capitol South Metro station. At the top of the escalators, the SOA targets were "executed" with fake blood and fell to the ground. The SOA graduates dragged the limp bodies through the fake blood on the sidewalk while others handed out information.
Another massacre reenactment took place in front of the Supreme Court, where hundreds were waiting in line to visit the court. The street theatre actions took place for two hours. Other affinity groups swarmed the Capitol Hill area, putting up posters with anti-SOA messages in Spanish and English.
Join us as we continue with our lobby efforts today. We'll keep you posted.
