"AktiviX: Activists' GNU/Linux Workshop"
September 11, 2003 - 12:43pm -- jim
AktiviX: Activists' GNU/Linux Workshop
September 20-21, 2003, Lancaster, UK.
A weekend for environmental / animal rights / peace / social justice campaigners to get to know GNU/Linux
Aktivix
Still using Microsoft? M$ -- one of the world's richest corporations, a
major backer of Dubya Bush, globalisation and animal testing. STOP! Use
Linux
instead. Free Software based on sharing and co-operation. GNU/Linux, once
a plaything for geeks is now an impressive, stable, secure, virus-free
and versatile alternative to Microsoft.
AktiviX is a chance to try out installing and running GNU/Linux. A chance
to share experiences and enthusiasm with other activists. Whatever the
level
of ability, confidence or experience with computers all activists who are
interested in moving to Free software for a Free world are welcome. There will be workshops and discussions for all levels of ability, here
are some of the suggestions so far:
Basic training
Which distribution?
Installation-only workshop
Intro to GNU/Open Source/Free Software philosophy
Where to find support and info
Multimedia -- sound and video, including streaming (radio, television)...
Multimedia -- practical applications in Lancaster. a nice surprise
action...
Security (incl. GPG key signing...)
Networking
Databases (might run)
Php and mysql etc for websites (might run)
Making a decent newbie guide to GNU/Linux
Hacking -- getting the most out of your command-line
Using Linux on older machines (incl. X-terminals)
Here's the basic details -- more will follow shortly:
General Stuff
Please, please, please let us know you are coming -- this helps us to
organise food, computers and places to sleep...
Let us know what kind of issues you're working on. This isn't really
important, but it's nice to know :-) (If your group or campaign has a
website let us
know and we'll put a link at the bottom).
Food and Accomodation
Let us know if you need somewhere to sleep -- this will be on somebody's
floor in Lancaster. If you really need a bed let us know and we'll do
our
best. We can also send you details of B&B's etc...
We'll hopefully be organising vegan food for attendees -- check back in a
few weeks to see how we're getting on. Lancaster has lots of good food
places (lots of cheap Indian restaurants and two vegetarian cafes for
starters).
Getting There
The venue is in the centre of town. Lancaster has an intercity railway
station -- check nationalrail.co.uk for timetables and fares.
Transport --
let us
know if you will be travelling by vehicle and have spare spaces, or are
looking for a lift. We'll put lift-share offers and requests on the
website.
Money
The event is costing us to put on -- getting and moving equipment, food,
materials and all the usual costs. But: we don't want to charge, cos we
don't
want people to be excluded just because they're not rich. Therefore the
event is free/donation for individuals and small activist groups. For
larger/richer groups that have a training budget (or another way of
re-allocating money) we suggest £40.
