published on CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online). CIAO is a
comprehensive source for research in international affairs. It publishes
a wide range of scholarship that includes working papers from university
research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, proceedings
from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs. The conference panelists -- Professors David Calleo, Stanley Hoffmann, and
Robert O. Paxton, and journalist Christopher Caldwell -- explored the
recent tensions in French-American relations. The guests included
distinguished scholars, policy makers, and opinion shapers from leading
research institutes and newspapers, many of whom participated in the
question-and-answer period. The edited version of the transcript is
