City University of New York Rally Against Tuition Increases

City University of New York Rally Against Tuition Increases
Barbara Bowen
I’m writing to let you know that a student coalition at CUNY has organized a rally against tuition increases, to take place this Tuesday, December 14, at 5:00 p.m., in front of Governor-Elect Andrew Cuomo’s office: 120 Broadway in Lower Manhattan.
The call for the rally is attached. As you may know, the PSC also opposes the tuition hikes and calls instead for reasonable ways to address the State’s budget shortfall and provide enough funds for CUNY. The tuition increase is a tax in disguise. While Cuomo has vowed he will oppose all new taxes, will he oppose this “tax” on students?
The rally on Tuesday is a student coalition event, not one planned or organized by the PSC. Its positions overlap with many of ours, and we urge those of you who want to take a stand against balancing the State budget on our students’ backs to join them on Tuesday.
In solidarity,
Barbara Bowen

RALLY AGAINST CUNY TUITION HIKES!
Join with CUNY students and faculty and other New Yorkers who support public education!
When: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 5PM
Where: 120 BROADWAY (between Cedar and Pine)
Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo’s office
Take A/C/J/Z/2/3/4/5 to Fulton Street
• The CUNY Board of Trustees has voted to increase tuition but the state legislature can still reverse this decision in its budget. We have won rollbacks before!
• “No new taxes” really means “tax poor and working people” through higher tuition and MTA fares and slashed public services.
• CUNY tuition has risen 44% since 2003 and 276% since 1990. Hikes will continue unless we fight them!
• While tuition goes up and state funding goes down, classes are getting larger and resources are shrinking. It’s time to change our budget priorities and put money into public education.
