The exhibition will explore the synergies between the artists who performed at Judson Memorial Church in the 1960s and 70s and the church ministry and congregation in Greenwich Village during this tumultuous period of political and social ferment. It offers social context for understanding this unique collaboration, against the background of the various social movements of the 1960s involving Free Speech, Womens Liberation, Gay Rights, Liberation Theology, and the movement against the war in Vietnam.

A roundtable discussion taking place Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Judson will kick off the exhibitions opening. This discussion will address the impact and reverberations of this historic moment for the artists, and for the mission of the church in subsequent decades.

The exhibit opening and reception at Fales Library will immediately follow the roundtable discussion. The exhibition will go beyond nostalgia to seriously investigate the resonances of a movement that has forever changed the lives of those who were there, and explore its meanings for subsequent generations.

The exhibition will consist of oral histories, artifacts (photographs, programs, posters, records, graphic notations, reviews from the Village Voice), writings by Al Carmines and Rev. Howard Moody about Judsons Arts Ministry, music recordings, and video clips of dance performances.

The exhibit and reception will take place in the Fales Archive on the 3rd Floor of the NYUs Bobst Library, which is the large red sandstone building on Washington Square South between LaGuardia Place and Washington Square East. The 6:30 roundtable will be at Judson. There will be escorts in place to help the audience get to Fales.

The exhibition will run from October through January 7th. The Fales Archive closes at 5:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at 4:45 pm on Friday. The exhibition will be open until 8:00 p.m. on the evening of the first performance at Judson on Friday, October 29th. The Fales Archive is typically not open on weekends, but the library has agreed to open on a few Sunday afternoons in coordination with Judson during the course of the exhibit. ________________________________________________________________________
