Stand Up New York 9/11 Actions and Protests Planned

STAND UP NEW YORK
9/11 Remembrance for Global Peace and Justice

July, 2002 -- President Bush, backed by most other politicians and
the mass media, is using the tragedy of September 11, 2001, to
justify an endless "war against terrorism." In Afghanistan,
predictably, this resulted in what a sanitized military jargon calls
"collateral damage." In human terms it is thousands of civilian
lives lost. And Afghanistan is only the first stop in Bush's global
campaign. U.S. troops are already active in Colombia, the Philippines,
and elsewhere. US aid abets Israel's war against the Palestinian
people in disregard of international law, UN resolutions, and basic
human rights. Iraq is the next major target.Even on its own terms, such a war does not make anyone more
secure against terrorism. According to an article in the June 16 New
York Times
: "Classified investigations of the Qaeda threat now
under way at the F.B.I. and C.I.A. have concluded that the war in
Afghanistan failed to diminish the threat to the United States."
And then there are the domestic victims -- of racism, of repression,
and of attacks on democratic and civil rights: innocent immigrants
incarcerated on unsubstantiated charges, without bail or any
right to appeal; U.S. citizens and residents of Middle Eastern or
South Asian descent who have been attacked or deprived of their
rights due to ethnic or religious profiling; young people of color who
are drawn into the war machine because there are few if any
alternatives; school children, the elderly, working people around the
nation, who face cutbacks in social and human services to fund war
and tax cuts for corporations; anyone who has a stake in basic
democratic freedoms and liberties.

We must come together to seek alternatives, because there are
alternatives: policies that favor social justice for all people -- at home
and around the globe -- instead of the profits of American businesses.
Dissent against this war is not terrorism. It is not unpatriotic. On the
contrary, dissent is essential to the tradition of democratic struggle
which has a long and honored place in the political life of this
country. Today it is the most humanitarian act that any U.S. resident
can undertake. Join us from September 6-11 for the following
calendar of events, to remember the victims of September 11 and
others around the globe, to call for peace, for global justice, for
grass-roots
democracy, to protest against war and the erosion of democratic
freedoms and civil liberties at home, and to reaffirm our humanity.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6-7, AND MONDAY SEPTEMBER 9
We will publish
a calendar of decentralized local, constituency, and
politically focused direct actions around New York City so everyone can plug
into the event(s) of their choice.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
We are planning a mass public demonstration and rally
for world peace through global justice.

TUESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 10 TO WEDNESDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER 11

We are
calling for an all night vigil to remember the dead
around the world and call for alternatives to war.
