The correspondence below relates to how to crack the upload limit on the donkey. It was excavated by a fellow who had a very generous attitude towards sharing bandwidth until he started getting hassle form his ISP. He's written a good little review of file sharing progs.

Here is an interview with a chap working on a new edonkey style network which may be interesting.

Bah, another review here, watch out for the annoying po-ups though.

Is this patch for the Linux version of EDonkey2000 v34.16.57 ? If so would you have any idea of where the changes need to be made in the Windows version. I have tried to find address 000a11a4 you mentioned but it is not in the windows version.

Dimension This was the windows version. Check your email. Backup your old copy and then copy this file into your directory (The default is C:\Program Files\edonkey2000). Also get a good hex editor like Hex Workshop 3.1 from Breakpoint Software for next time. starwars was right on the money for his address. It was in hex btw (that's why it had the letter "a" in it twice)

After i've install this edonkey and somone hacked me. changed all the registry setting and delete all the log file and power off my computer!..

Copyleft Attitude is a pretty tasty looking site, although accessible only to francophones, at least for the time being.

The maintainer of the site Antoine Moreau defines the purpose of the site as follows: ".... to make known and promote the idea of copyleft in the realm of contemporary art. Taking as a model practices connected to free software to be inspired by and apply them to artistic creation. It is for that reason that we have designed the 'Free Art License'. It's a tool for creating works by authorising the free reproductio, free distribution and free transformation with respect to author's rights."

Nokia wireless rooftop networking can be qualitatively distinguished by its mesh mode of operation. This simply means that every node acts as an IP router (digital radio modem and Air OS) for the whole network, what is known as multipoint to multipoint in the lingo. Thus problems such as the need for lie of sight between a main access point and distnce limitations within any given footprint are obviated.

The Nokia system operates off 'Airheads'(!) that have a fixed or wireless connection to the rest of the network, and each of which can accomodate up to 40 connctions. The network actually improves as it grows as the number of routers increases the distance and power required of the transmission contracts.

These problems can also be overcome in 802.11 networks by use of the peer to peer mode (some software will probably help)and the construction of diy antennas - which have been used to cover distances up to twelve miles - but for the moment at least are less reliable.

The other advantage to 802.11b is that there are alr4eady many nodes in existence, particularly in the anglophone world such as New York, SF, Seattle and London. Furthermore the basic equipment is very cheap, with cards available for $70 and a linksys access point/bridge costing only $100.
